Can someone tell me the difference between the FCP4 Academic vs. and the FCP4 standard version?

No difference in the program. The difference is in the license agreement. With
the academic version you agree to use the program for educational purposes
only and not for profit.

Also, in most cases, you can't buy the next version at the "upgrade" price...you have to pay either full retail, or full academic price, depending on whether you're still a student.
