Gross misuse of the forum Can't Post

It seems that there are kinds of people who post on this forum:
1. K-12 teachers who are interested in communicating and sharing with other k-12 teachers as is the stated intent of the forum on the top of the forum title page. These people are intelligent enough to be able to both read and write. They post questions and comments to appropriate to be shared with other teachers.
2. People who are too mentally challenged to read the clear instruction as to the purpose of the forum on the top of the page. These people are such a large group and their questions and comments are so poorly written or outright ignorant that I can't imagine any school hiring them to teach anything at all. If they actually are teachers of video production, then they should resign before they do further damage to their students.
I'm certain that these people are not teachers but instead are average Joe's who seem to think that the forum is source of answers for their consumer level questions. The net effect of all their inapproproiate questions on a professional level forum is that it turns legitimate teachers away from using a valuable resource - namely this forum. It, frankly, is too frustrating to weed through all the junk trying to find a legitimate communication from one teacher to another.
I propose the following:
1. Hal, please delete any posting from anyone who does not give both a first and last name and the name and address of the school where they teach. Perhaps these could be made a required field to be filled in before the program will accept a posting in the first place. I would suggest that certain additonal people who have proven to be a valuable technical resource to all teachers who are here - people like Doug Graham, the technical guru of the site it seems - be given honorary posting clearances.
2. Fellow teachers, please don't encourage these people by responding to them. Perhaps if we ignore them, they'll go away.

Re: Gross misuse of the forum Can't Post

I hear you Phil. In the past I deleted quite a few messages so that only teachers could use this forum. Deciding who is a teacher and who is not is the easy part. Deciding which non-teachers are allowed to answer is more difficult.
In the coming months I will be moving the site to a new hosting service which will have software capabilities this site does not have. At that time I will probably require registration to use this forum. That should solve the problem.
In the meantime let me know which posts to delete.

Re: Gross misuse of the forum [In reply to] Can't Post

To a degree I agree also. But I have also been in training for instructors and seen how much knowledge some instructors don't have in this field, but have been given the task by their superiors to teach these courses. So I can understand the level of some of the questions posted.
No, I am not a teacher. I am a telecommunications technician by job title, but try to do my share to raise the level of education being presented in our schools.

First of all, I would like to answer the question.
Try http://archive.org/movies/movies.php?PHPSESSID=2601de0bb209bf440f7bfa710d86dffc
Yeah...long one but try. This is an excellent place to grab royalty free footage to play with and learn from.
This request is not out of line in that should you be teaching video and editing, this give the student a chance not only to see how things were done, but try to correct the problems on them. That would seem a valuable lesson.
I stumbled upon this site because I am always checking out what things people are working on and sometimes to solve my own problems. I was prompted to write because of the response you got. I am so offended.
Now, as for this Phil Harris? I have no idea who you are but I am personally offended by your answer. Yes, I am a teacher. Yes, I do Video editing. Yes, I did Television network editing and am retired at this point. Since you seem to know it all, I assume you have worked it all. Network TV? News? There is a vast difference from the classroom to the reality of the real world. The real world is down and dirty and I would applaud anyone that can learn their skills well enough to handle any occasion quickly and effectively. I have to assume that you do not consider yourself and 'average Joe.'
Which leads me to believe you are above someone who may ask a simple question?
I can tell you from experience that those 'Joe's' are usually the ones that get the jobs in video production because they are not afraid to learn new things and research their craft.
So, from one professional, to a self acclaimed other, I would hope Mr. Harris that you would learn some manners, learn some new ways of dealing with people and expand your imagination just a bit. Maybe even learn the word encouragement. I worked with your type many years and they never seemed to stay around long. Guess it is a good thing that you can teach because your attitude would never fly in the real world other then maybe a soap opera director. Their heads seem to be too large as well.
Ban me if you will. I simply had to respond to such stupidity. While there may be some that take advantage of your message board, this last man did not need to be the butt of your insecurity.

I think you read the forum wrong...Phil's post was not in response to the Archive question. Go back and look at the dates of the posts.

Mr. or Ms. Pietz:
Even though I suggested not responding to non-teachers, I feel public forums are no place for personal attacks. I've responded to your comments in private e-mail.

Phil,
Bravo!
I have taught video production since 1988 and while I have enjoyed visiting this forum several times over the last couple of years, I have become increasingly disappointed by the amount of questions from what seem to be “non-teachers.” I agree with Phil, that registration of school employment be included with future submissions, but I wonder if changing the title of the forum from “Teaching Video Production Forum” to something like “Video Production Forum for Educators” might dissuade the non-teacher from posting here.
