High School Video Textbook Can't Post

There is an all encompassing text out for high schools called Digital Overdrive. We have the interactive eBook CD-Rom complete with video samples, web links, graphic samples, etc. It is by far the best resource in this area and costs a heck of alot less than traditional texts. The company even updates it every year and charges a licensing fee. I have found it is so much better and is always current. I think the licensing fee was $300 a year for 25 computers and they even let you burn it for the kids to take home. The contract was for 5 years but at $1500, it has saved us a bundle and won't be out of date next year. The website www.digitaloverdrive.ca.

Looks to be a LOT more expensive than The new Video Lab DVD from Herbert Zettl. The DVD is in stock right here at VideoUniversity.com

Re: High School Video Textbook [In reply to] Can't Post

I looked at the website and no authors are listed that I can find except for a mention of author Dale Andrews in the "What's New?" section. Did I miss them? I do see that they are soliciting new chapter submissions for the next edition. Is Mr. Andrews one teacher who has written a chapter? Is this a conglomeration of chapters written by a conglomeration of teachers? Can anyone submit? What guarantee is there of expertise?
With the subject of textbooks and teaching materials, I anxiously await Phil Harris' textbook (Television Production: A Career Approach) which will be available from Goodheart Wilcox this summer. Phil is a frequent poster on this forum and an experienced television production teacher at Fairfax Academy in Fairfax, Virginia.

Thanks, Janet! In fact, I just received notice from the publisher that I'll receive the galley's of the first few chapters to review in the next few days! I'm anxiously awaiting them as well. I expect to be able to use the book in published form in September of '04 in my own classes instead of the draft manuscript.

Re: High School Video Textbook [In reply to] Can't Post

Here is what I know about the author from the literature I've seen and the back of the text. It is Dale Andrews who wrote all chapters but 1 which was done by another teacher and approved by Apple Computer. Dale is a director and taught part time for 8 years in a high school for the performing arts. He has directed concert videos for bands like Eve 6, Treble Charger etc. who have all had top 5 hits on Billboard. He owns Eastwood Multimedia that has produced everything from Cancer videos to TV Commercials, documentary and independent feature films. I have asked about submitting chapters and what the deal is. There is an interactive eBook coming out in May that has additional chapters from the printed text. They review and verify all material to validate authenticity. So it is bonus stuff. I guess the interactive version gets updated once a year to stay current and people that have bought in get the upgrades for free and can download them on their site. Basically it is never out of date, unlike a printed text which goes out very fast.
The book also said that he was a finalist for New Media Educator of the year in Canada in 2000 and was and has been the only high school teacher ever to reach that level. He has had the highest placement rate of students in high end film schools for the past 5 years running. 1 out of every 2 of his students that apply get in right out of high school as opposed to the national rate of 1 in 300. I think that should pretty much attest to the legitimacy issue.
You can contact him directly. He has been very responsive to e-mails. A colleague of mine actually spent 2 hours on the phone with him one night when they had called with some questions. I know Dale personally travels to help set up programs too that don't even use his book. I agree the printed texts are a little higher than most but the CD is the way to go, especially with the upgrade offer.
