Get a light. Camcorders are just devices for recording light, and if there isn't any, it makes their job kind of difficult.
If you're doing something like surveillance work, there are image intensifiers available for the XL1. Everything will be green, but you can see in the dark. If you need color, you need a light.

Grain results from not enough light coming through the lens of the camera. If you can light the scene, that will cut down or eliminate the grain.
