Is Canon XL1S a good camera Can't Post

I received a grant to buy a camera in the XL1S price range ($3000-$3500) and was planning on getting it but my dealer totally trashed the camera citing the lack of XLR inputs and clunky ergonomics. He recommended the Panasonic AG-dvx100a. I am also going to be taking a lot of still shots with this and the camera will mostly be used by inexperienced teenagers so I would appreciate your thoughts on those as well.

Most anyone who knows anyhting about professional video production will tell you the XL1s is a good camera - Having said this, it's NOT the camera for inexperienced teenagers...Check out the Panasonic 3 chip cameras that run under $1K, or if you want to spend more money the Canon GL2 for just under $2K - The features you're paying for in the XL1s are overkill for what you want to do.

COnsidering how cheap digital still cams are, why not get one designed for stills, instead of using a DVCam? This would also let you have two students working at once. I bet you could even find a used one (or ten) for free that will be better than the 1MP most DVCams have.
