Movie Sound Effects Can't Post

Does anyone know how to create that very popular sound effect in movie trailers. It's usually the part of the preview when white flashes and there's a sound effect that sounds really cool, like a swooshing sound or something. I'm sure I've even seen it in wedding previews. Does this sound crazy? Does anyone know how to produce or buy this sound effect.
thanks

I think it's just a short clip of white noise, rapidly ramped up and down. Many audio editing programs can generate white noise, or you can tape a sample from your TV, turned to a channel with nothing on.

Dear Doug

Would that be it? Maybe it sounds more like a boom than a swoosh. Do you think that is still white noise? Just curious.

I recently saw a whole CD (royalty free stuff) of these types of sounds for sale on ebay. So you might try searching for Whooshes and Bangs.

Or this is what I have done...

Make a short recording of you blowing into a mic at close distance.

Then process the audio by changing the playback speed (i.e. pitch) and adding some EQ, flanging, panning, echo, or other effects as desired.

For bangs and booms, try doing basically the same thing with recordings of various dropped or thumped items.

Be creative.

Take it a step further by mixing some of the sounds together.

Sound Track Pro comes with an extremely large library of top notch quality foley sounds and various sounds for film editing. It has several versions of what you want.

Also, some very nice quality sounds can be found for free at ljudo.com, but it's touchy about search words. You may have to think of several different wordings to find what you want.

You gotta be careful with those sound FX CDs...

I bought some at a record store once. They were priced right around what you'd pay for an ordinary pop music CD, about $10-12 per disc. "What a bargain!" I thought.

When I got home, I read the fine print. Yep, they're royalty free...except they're licensed for home use only. No commercial projects.

The royalty free SFX CDs that ARE licensed for commercial use tend to be priced about the same as buyout music discs...$40 - 100 per CD.

Just bought the Video CoPilot CD mentioned above and I'm very happy with it. Easy to download and they will also send me the CD. I've been having lots of fun playing with my son making crazy sound effects movies!
