If you are using RF connections that might be some of the problem. Using Audio/Video Inputs/Outputs is almost always gives you better quality. Since you have an older TV that is probably not an option. If you are using RF cables try switching the VCR output from Channel 3, to Channel 4. If viewing tapes is working fine, and you are using your VCR to change channels either off air or though cable, you can just about forget that, I have yet to find a modern day VCR with a good tuner. If your TV is Cable ready; or if you are getting off-air signals, and your TV has only one input, I would use an A/B switch to get signals to your TV. The A input would be cable, the B input would be the VCR. You would also need to split the signal before it gets to the VCR with one side of the splitter going to the VCR, and the other going to the A side of the A/B box. I hope that helps.
