Sony HD camera FX1 drawbacks Can't Post

I read the following here on VidUni and am wondering if there's no XLR inputs then how do you get sound from a wireless mic with a transmitter and receiver?

Also, if this camera cannot record 24fps then what does it record at and what can you do to get it to look like film besides using software like Magic Bullet etc? Any help please, would be appreciated.

"On the negative side, no XLR inputs or independent audio-level controls. It has no 24P mode so cannot record progressive scan video at the 24 frames per second rate. No B/W optical view finder, although many really like the 3.5" LCD.The manual focus is a bit difficult."

The FX-1 has a stereo minijack microphone input. If your external mic has an XLR connector, you can get an adapter box like this one.

The FX-1 records video at 29.97 frames per second (NTSC version) or 25 frames per second (PAL). Each frame consists of two interlaced fields. It has a "pseudo" 24 fps mode that can simulate the look of telecined movie film, but it does not have a true 24 fps progressive recording mode. Most agree that processing the footage in post (e.g., Magic Bullet) gives a better look than the camera's Cineframe mode.

And would a Canon XL2 in your opinion be better for purposes of sound recording and to give that special cinematic feel?

Also, why would one want a camera like the HDR FX1 that records in High Def and DV? What's the benefit of this?

Is the HDR FX1 true widescreen 16:9?

In order:

1. No, unless I had a requirement to record four audio channels. The Canon XLs are the only DV camcorders that can do this.

2. HDV contains about 4-5 times as much image information as DV, and its color reproduction is better too.

3. Yes.

Is there a better HD camera out now for around 5 grand or less?

Also, why would one want to record 4 audio channels?

It's debatable as to whether they are "better", but both Panasonic and JVC have HD or HDV camcorders out that compete in this price range. The Panasonic actually costs a lot more in the end, because you have to equip it with expensive memory chips or a hard drive recorder to actually record in HD. The JVC is 720p, as opposed to the 1080i flavor of HDV that the Sony cam uses. People who want "the film look" may find the JVC more suitable. Like the Panasonic, you can spend a lot of money on this camera, equipping it with larger batteries (run time out of the box is less than an hour) or a better lens (the next lens up in quality from the stock lens will set you back $13,000 or so).

See the VU HDV forum for much more on all the current HDV camcorders.

re: audio. I often record four or more audio sources during a wedding ceremony. For example, I might have a mic on the groom, a backup at the altar rail, one on the minister's lectern, one on the reader's lectern, and one in the choir loft, plus general audio from at least on on-camera mic. I use two cameras, which lets me record up to four audio sources (two audio tracks per camera). Additional sources are recorded on other media, either a minidisc or an MP3 recorder. With the Canon XL1 or XL2, you can record up to four audio sources on ONE DV tape. Of course, you have to accept reduced audio quality to do so, using 12 bit instead of 16 bit sampling.

How can you shoot anamorphic with the Sony FX1 HD camera? Is it as simple as buying an anamorphic lens and screwing it onto the camera?

Well, yes.

But there is no reason to use an anamorphic adapter with this camcorder. It shoots natively in widescreen 16:9. The only reason to use an anamorphic adapter is when you want to shoot 16:9 with a camcorder whose imager is 4:3 native.
