Teaching Video Production Can't Post

I currently live on Long Island in New York. I got my B.A in Film studies and am now interested in teaching video production in K-12 schools. I am currently taking 12 credits in basic education courses at a local graduate school. I have taken the NY State teacher tests as well. I would like to know if anyone can guide me as to what to do next? I am very eager to get involved in my own program at a school and see how I can build the studio into something special. Any tips? Any known jobs, or T.A positions? I would move anywhere where I could get started in this field. All advice would be useful. Thanks
Ryan

Re: Teaching Video Production Can't Post

Ryan,
TV/Video classes vary quite a bit from school to school. In my school the
video department falls under Fine Arts. Some schools have it under business
and others with communication courses. My degree is in fine arts and I started
teaching ceramics, sculpture and drawing. My 2nd year they wanted me to
start a video program and it ran 2 courses that year. Since then the
enrolements have gone up a lot and now TV/Video is all I teach.
My suggestion would be to just start sending out resumes everywhere you
can, while also keeping your eyes open for any school opening ads. Another
suggestion would be to target schools with no current video program (there's a
lot out there). Put a proposal togehter for what it is you would like to do there
(i.e. broadcast morning announcements, record school events to air on local
cable, P.R. stuff to enhance the school's image to the community, etc.). My
guess is, there are schools out there that would be interested in the program
but don't know how to get it started. Currently I know of no colleges offering
courses in TV/Video Production Education. A lot of times schools ask for
volunteers already working at the school to take on the task of creating the
programs. This is why a lot of video teachers started out teaching another
subject (art, math, english P.E.). So a proposal and cover letter along with film/
video experience may work for you. Play up the whole entire school
enrichment aspect, rather than a video program running as an entity unto
itself, administrations love that stuff.
Good luck!

Re: Teaching Video Production [In reply to] Can't Post

How does Idaho sound? Send me an e-mail that tells me when you are available and if you are serious about moving. There may be an opportunity at a high school in Boise.
