Transfering VHS Videos to digital on the computer? Can't Post

I need to know how to transform VHS video and put it on my computer so I can make a video (cut, paste, music, titles, etc) MPEG1. Is there something I can use to transfer 8MM to the computer as well? Thanks for your help.

Hi Ryan,
With all due respect, I think you may have just asked more than you know. I hope what I have to say helps, but it will probably raise more questions than it answers.
A "non-linier" video editing system (NLE) on you computer is what you will probably ultimately want to be happy doing this sort of thing. They come in all sorts of flavors starting with something simple like Windows Movie Maker that comes with Windows XP, to much more elaborate and expensive systems.
Such systems usually utilize a firewire card for capturing the video (digital). However, where you are wanting to capture VHS (analog), you will probably want to look into a card that can capture analog as well. Or as another option, some digital video cameras can be used as a dock between your VCR, and firewire card for capturing.
Getting video to a compressed form (i.e. MPEG1 as mentioned) may be nothing more than choosing an export setting on your NLE after you edit a project. Or there are lots of stand-alone software encoders that can be used to compress an .avi file (created with a NLE) such as TMPGEnc (freeware for MPEG1).
You should also know that video editing requires an optimized computer system. You may need to make other upgrades besides a firewire card, in order to have a stable system. Digital video capture/editing/exporting is very demanding on a computer.
For starters, I suggest you find some NLEs that fit your budget. Then check the system requirements for each. For more in depth info on optimizing a system for DV, you might want to check out www.videoguys.com.
As far as "8mm" goes. I assume you are talking video here and not film. But it's about the same as dealing with VHS. Assuming you have a deck/camera that can play 8mm tapes.
Tons more questions now... I know. But it's a wonderful hobby, so I hope you'll do your homework. And I hope I've given you some idea where to start.

You may use an ATI USB Wonder it will transfer analog (RCA or SVHS) signal and import it via your computers' USB port. It does NOT work with WIndows XP....but will work with the other Windows operating systems. And, if you don't have a video editing software program I would suggest Ulead Video Studio 7...not only can you edit video...very easily...you can also make dvd's with it ...inclusive are simple templates for menus...I have had 6th graders using it with great success.
