Video Contest Can't Post

I am new to the video production teaching world. I have heard of a contest where they give you a topic and you have 24 hours to complete the project. Anyone heard of this or something like it. I would be up for a contest for my students.

Thanks in advance.

I've heard of these too, but never participated in one. I've seen a couple of different formats.

1. Freeform. The contestants have one day (or sometimes, a weekend) to shoot and edit a movie on any subject they choose.

2. Edit Against The Clock. Each contestant is furnished with the exact same source footage, and told to edit a finished piece, at least X minutes long, within the allotted time period.

I don't know of anyone running a competition like this on the national level. It's usually within a video club or a class.

Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) found in nearly every high school in the country that offers any kind of vocational/industrial courses offers local, regional, state and national contests through their SkillsUSA Contests. Television Production is a career course in many progressive high schools. The kind of contest you're talking about is exactly like part of the SkillsUSA contest.

24 hours for students might be too demanding. That borders on insanity. But DVinfo is running one right now (and periodically) where you have ten days to submit your finished project. They also tell you a bit in advance when the next one starts so you can clear your schedule, but do not tell you the rules or theme until the start time. Check out the current one at http://www.dvinfo.net/...rumdisplay.php?f=100

these are quite common. 48 Hour Film Project and National Film challenge are the most popular, with Filmerica being a distant third.

The others really don't get a lot of entries so winning something is fairly easy - only 15 films were submitted to one of the festivals I did.

I did one while in college and thought it was a great learning experience in time management and what can be done when you put your mind to it - frankly I think it saved my thesis film.

Anyways, I have since done two in the past year, which is on my prototype website in progress...
