for teachers - video contests for your students to enter Can't Post

Now that we're near the end of the school year, perhaps we, as teachers can begin to create a list of websites that offer decent contests for students to enter their video projects into. Particularly of interest would be contests that do NOT require entrance fees as so often these sites can be scams.

www.studentfilmmakers.com offers several contests as well as an extremely interesting website.
www.casablanca.tv also hosts a video contest

Come on, teachers, let's help each other out! Who knows of some more contests worth entering?

Hello Phil,

Here are a few video contests I am aware of:

* NSPA (National Student Press Assoc) Broadcast Pacemakers
http://www.studentpress.org/nspa/contests.html#bpm

* Student Filmmakers Summer Shorts Contest
http://www.studentfilmmakers.com/summercontest.shtml

These first two are obviously student specific - the next two festivals/contests are open to all Amateur producers, but they encourage and welcome student submissions. They do have a small entry fee but I can personally vouch for their legitimacy, I presented at their Fall Festival this past year and sat in on many screenings. A student production did win one of their categories!

*Amateur Motion Picture Society - American International Film & Video Festival
http://www.ampsvideo.com/...NTSC%20entryform.pdf

*Amateur Movie Makers Association - AMMA Magic Moments
http://www.ammaweb.org/contests.html

Regards,

Chet

I can add a couple to your contest list. One is the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Journalism Award. This national contest has professional as well as college and high school divisions. The site is www.rfkmemorial.org.

The second is the Student Television Network. This organization will hold its third annual convention in California in January. Over 1200 students from 32 states attended last year. They offer on-site as well as mail in contests. Student crews bring their own gear and have a few hours to produce music videos, video essays, PSA's, stand-up's and anchor samples from topics they haven't seen until the contest. For the mail-in contests in the past, the students would receive a broad feature story theme via e-mail and have only a few days to have their finished product postmarked back to the judges.

I encourage all teachers to check out their website at www.studenttelevision.com and plan to attend next year.

And then of course, various scholastic journalism organizations sponsor broadcasting competitions. I've worked particularly with the Journalism Education Association and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association, but I'm sure each region has its own.
