Tony,
Unfortunately, a Hi8 deck (if you can find one) will cost MORE than an Hi8 camcorder. You have a couple of options:
1. If you have a collection of Hi8 tapes, but nothing to play them on, consider having them duplicated to VHS. Many small video services can do this for you; look in your local Yellow Pages. (If you're near Washington, D.C., contact me; I can do the job for you.)
2. If you have an operating Hi8 camcorder (the one that made the tapes in the first place), just hook that to your TV and use it as the playback deck.
3. If your collection of Hi8 tapes is large, or if you want to preserve the original quality, rather than accept the degradation of a VHS copy, get a Sony camcorder in the Digital 8 format. These not only record in D8 (which is, electronically speaking, the same as DV), but can play back your Hi8 legacy tapes.

Is there a way to play Hi-8 tapes straight into the computer from the Hi-8 camera?

Re: hi 8 player [In reply to] Can't Post

Doug,
I live in the DC area and I have a similar problem. I have approximately 8 hours of video on Hi8 tapes from my camcorder. My camcorder has gone out of commission and I need to get the video onto VHS tapes so I can edit it into a home movie. Could you give me an estimate on how much that would cost? Would it be cheaper if I supply the blank VHS tapes? Please let me know.
Thanks,
Dave Tilman
