need ideas for lessons Can't Post

I'm a video production teacher at a Los Angeles high school. I'm having a
rough time trying to get the students excited about the class, believe it or not.
We have 6 FCP edit set-ups and 7 DV cams. My background is post production
but I need help in the production lessons. I teach at a year round school and
our breaks come in the middle of the semester so projects that are short are
best. Suggestions?

I teach broadcast journalism in West Virginia. The best way I've found to generate excitement is to create an audience for your students' work: school's closed circuit system, local cable, school assembly w/admission charge and a video projector/8-foot screen and cash prizes for best videos, or stream it to the web.
The second motivator is MONEY. Teach your students then let them get paid for their work through a school-based enterprise. Clients pay a fee for video production services; part goes to pay students and part to your program for gear. Phil Harris at Fairfax Academy is a master at this. Read about his program here.

Since I'm a journalism teacher, my students produce news and feature stories for the most part, but if you want to talk about specific ideas, e-mail me. Also, Dave Davis at Hillcrest High School has an excellent program, with video on their website and a link for story ideas. Check it out at

Good luck.

I like Janet's ideas.

An extension on her "find an audience" pointer might be to hold a school-wide film festival. Prizes for the best entries, and a showing before the whole student body.
Your lessons could then tie in to whatever project the individual students (or teams) are creating. Teach scripting and storyboarding early in the term, shooting and lighting later, and editing last.
