recording from vcr to dvd Can't Post

I wanted to clarify my previous posting: I frequently record or have someone record for me, children's reading hour at my local library and rewatch the video to give me ideas for my 3rd grade classes. Since I like to archive the readings I have been transferring to dvd. Sometimes I lend a tape to a friend and want to transfer from dvd to vhs because she doesn't own a dvd player. I have a dvd recorder replacement after another dvd recorder I bought broke. On my previous unit I could hook it up to and from my dvd unit so that I could view/record vhs and dvd simultaniously. My new unit won't allow that. Is there any way I can adapt the systems which will allow me to play a dvd and record it to tape?
