simply getting images from sony hi8 to telly via vcr

Hi all
Basic question should take about 5 mins to sort out.
I plug the wire from the AV/out on my sony camcorder thru the scart adaptor to my video (YES ITS IN THE RIGHT SOCKET ON THE VIDEO BACK) and hit play. I can see the pictures on the flip out screen on the camcorder itself but nothing on the telly. (I have NTL plugged in too-in case its relevant) I know its the right channel because when I hit play with a prerecorded video in the video player it comes up on screen. However If I turn that off (not the video just the tape play) and hit play on the camcorder I dont get anything coming up on the telly.
Yes I have got the camcorder set to 'Player' too.
I know its something really simple but I am jet lagged and would like some bright spark to help me out!
