Anyone hear of HI-MD (Hi-Res Mini Disc) ? Can't Post

Just got a bag of DV tapes and MD discs from a corporate client and wants them converted from PAL to NTSC. I told them that the MD are audio and there is no such thing as PAL audio. They said that they could not play them, so they assumed that there were some Eurpoean format.

Well I tried them and BINGO, they won't play! Just a tone on program one and silence on program 2. But it did display "HI-MD" on the player's display. Well I did the web thing and found that there is a new format (by Sony) that uses high capacity discs to record more audio and if you use std MD discs , it will work but will not play back on standard (read: older) MD players. You will get exactly what I described.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Does anyone have a HI-MD player/recorder? Or has Sony slipped this one by us?

MD-HD isn't anything "new" and has been around for nearly 2 years. Great format for uncompressed or lightly compressed audio. I prefer it to using an iRiver or similar. You can pick one up at any Best Buy, Costco, Circuit City, CrapUSA, most any place like that. Not too expensive.

only for personal reasons of liking the converters better in MD-HD. They use Cirrus 7 chips, which are a fair grade better than iRiver, Rio, iPod, and most other similar recording devices. But I don't know that for dialog it matters a whole lot. iRiver is smaller, and that's nice.
