Ya, this is a tough one, and I'm not sure there is any good solution. Perhaps the best approach is a business plan that limits your envolvement past a certain amount of time. You could use the project trimmer (I use Premiere 6.5), to create copies of your clips, project, etc. This would allow you do dump all the unused footage off your hard drive. Chances are your project will still be too big for archiving on a single DVD. But it might just free up enough HD space to start another project. And if you do move it off to DVDs, even a 2 hr timeline should fit on 5 or 6 discs. Or half that many if using Dual Layer discs. I suggest you practice using the trimmer first though, because there are some logical quirks that you need to watch out for when restoring a project. Another option would be to use the project trimmer to create a batch list so you could go back and recapture your clips automatically from your original source tapes. You'd still probably want to copy all your stills with the trimmer though, because they won't be recoverable from a tape. Ya, it would be a real pain to re-create a project this way. But it is relatively easy to do the back-up once you get the hang of it. You'd really only want to restore this way if you were desparate though. Again, practice doing this. Third option, export the entire project back to tape. If you are forced to re-capture it, you will have lost all the cuts in your timeline, but at least you can get the bulk of it back for re-editing quite easily. This is probably the option I rely on most. But if I'm worried at all, I back-up with the previous method too, just in case. Option 4... If you are fairly certain you will need to go back and re-work a project, buying an external hard drive to store it for a while might start to look "penny wise". Or you could use the external to start a new project.
