Computer Help/Advice Can't Post

Recently when booting my computer, there is a different set of events that occur. Below is link to a Screenshot of the first screen upon bootup. I notice that the machine runs through a memory test each time it boots up. Then the new hardware wizard appears indicating something about a multi-media Audio controller. Second screenshot Link. After declining to do the wizard - it seems that everything operates as it always has. No problems. This computer is not connected to the internet, and is solely used for editing DVSTORM/STORMEDIT. I have made no changes or instals that I could attribute this strange behavior. From the start up screen, it indicated that I should go into the BIOS and make the changes it recommends... or is it that I have to just re-install the driver fro my sound card. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks Ezra Dual PIII Win 2000 (system put together by DVLive) Thanks Ezra

fun little quirky issues like this have a habit of happening on my computers up here at work that are on their last legs, or the CMOS battery is dying. I would seriously look at seeing if newer hardware is compatible with that system, in case you have a catastrophic crash in the future.....BY my estimates that computer is 6-7 years old right?

and now I just looked at your BIOS post screen. change the CMOS battery. it is the small button battery on your motherboard. That error gets thrown when the BIOS cant remember the settings provided. if you have onboard sound build into the board, it might have been disabled by the system builder, which could be why you are getting the new hardware found wizard.

Yes. It is about 6 years old. I will try changing that battery. Should I change the BIOS to what it recommends? or do you think that battery change will re-correct the problem?

Thanks

you will need to reset the bios....at least to get rid of the new hardware wizard. do you have a soundcard in addition to what might be included with the motherboard? if so you will probably want to disable the onboard soundcard in the bios. I think thats what may be throwing your hardware wizard. Make sure you get the exact same battery. some batteries look alike, but make sure it is the same model #. A different voltage could cause some serious problems with your cmos chip. Just a little trick I learned from someone else's mistake a few years back.

Tim,

Thanks for all the help. I will open her up and check the battery tommorow evening. I believe I have a soundblaster card installed along with the audio built in the motherboard - I think you are correct. Question: Do I need to disable the one on the motherboard via the BIOS or can I do it from the device manager. (see screen shots)

really you can do it either way, but the best way, and the way most people would do it is through the BIOS. It will probably be under an integrated peripherals tab or an advanced tab if I had to guess.

Tim,

I changed the CMOS Battery and it seems to have been the Culprit. I tested the Battery - It was Dead. I went into the Bios and disabled the onboard sound- changed the SDRAM Latency to 2, Reset the clock & Date and everything seems to be working. Thanks for the help.

Oh, one more thing....It still does a memory test upon bootup each time. It never did it before the CMOS Error, so I assume there is somthing to Disable in the BIOS. What do I look for in the Bios to disable the test?

Thanks again for all the Help ..... I would be totally lost without it :-)

I am learning a lot through this process though.

there should be an option somewhere in the BIOS to disable a full system startup check. it could also be labeled as fast bootup on any othe myriad of options. Tip: you can press escape to stop the memory test, and it will do nothing wrong to the machine!

You are totally welcome for the help. I might not be the most knowledgeable about the editing stuff, and I gain a ton of info from everyone here in that regard, computer troubleshooting is one way I can give back to this community. If you need anythign else dont hesitate to ask.
