Grab Image for Murder Case Can't Post

Hi all. I have an urgent request from a customer who has surveillance footage on a DVD. I know that I can somehow get the dvd files into my computer and eventually grab frames from the footage but would it make a quality difference if I were to get the tape (presumably a vhs) and grab the frames that way? I'm thinking that the dvd images would be of a lesser quality due to compression. Is that correct?

Thanks for any advice.

Surely you should get the images from the source?

as stated in other post evidence should come from original footage. if at all possible but it can be done from what you have if its all you got. because for it to be admisable as evidence there is a chain of evidence that has to be followed. with so much digital manipulation a good lawyer might eat you for lunch.

Re: [ppatton] Grab Image for Murder Case [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks for the reply ppatton

what kind of steps should i take so that i don't get eaten alive? a certificate? a screenshot of something? a video of the process?

also, is there a certain process i should take to rip the dvd other than figuring out what to program to use? (if no vhs tape is available).

(i searched on evidence but maybe i didn't drill down far enough)

I used to be a certified computer forensic specialist. There is a guideline you need to follow according to Federal Evidenciary Proceedure. You need to consult the lawyer in this case about what the court will accept or not. You can't just make a copy or alteration of something and prance into a court with it. I've seen judges that look for any reason to throw out "digital" media as evidence.
