Live/Eye problem, JVC-CV500 Can't Post

I am new to events - Live/Eye work. The AV company i work with loves to use too much lights on the curtains behind the speakers as effects, and very little on the speakers face. Hopeless to ask them for changing. The speakers face is just dark. My JVC-DV500, does best in low-light conditions, and i am lacking the knowledge how to cope with this situation. Should i use the 5600K+ND filter in this situations?
I am thankful for any advise.

Nope. 5600+ND is for outdoors in the sun. Use the 3200K filter wheel setting.

What you have is not a situation of too much light, but too much contrast. Video doesn't handle a very wide range of contrast.

The best solution is to reduce the contrast by adding light on the speaker's face. If they won't help you do that, or at least let you do that, then you'll have to shoot for the existing conditions.

White balance using the light that's on the subject (have an assistant hold a white card at the speaker's position). Use your zebra pattern exposure indicator. Expose for the subject, and let the over-bright background wash out. Zoom in tight on the subject, leaving as little of the background in the picture as possible.
