ME66 and Z1U Can't Post

Anyone using an ME66, AT897 or similar shotgun mic with a Z1U? How are you fitting mic into the Z1U's mic holder? These mics are too narrow to be held securely in the Z1U's mic holder.

I haven't tried this, but how about simply wrapping a few hefty rubber bands around the mic?

I've had success using foam from an old windscreen. The inner diameter (ID) should be the same size as your mic, and the OD (outer diameter) slightly LARGER than the mic holder.

Cut the foam to the same length as the mic holder, giving you a hollow sausage-like tube.

The mic holder will compress the foam, holding the mic securely, and the foam will provide some isolation between the mic & holder.

You might also look for similar foam at the hardware store, used as pipe insulation.

Good luck!

One thing that I have done before is use gaffer's tape on the microphone. Find a spot that is clear and will be in contact with the mic holder and then rap enough gaff tape around it to make it thicker. Although I like the idea of extra foam a little better.

Yeah, I've done this too. You've got to use the right gaffer's tape though. Some brands will get very gummy & leave residue on the mic when you try to take it off.

Thanks to all for your ideas. I thought about using black gaffer tape (the good stuff), but wondered if anyone had come up with another solution. I like Doug Graham's idea of the rubber band. Seems like it would be secure and easily removeable. I was at the the World Record Wedding Video Event in Sacramento yesterday, and noticed David Robbin was using an ME66 on a Z1U while shooting the bridal prep. I asked about him it later and he said he wrapped the mic with velcro, the wooly part. Might give that a try, too.

BTW, I though the WRWVE was a great experience, in contrast to the generally negative comments posted on VU. Met a lot of great people and the commaraderie among the videographers was remarkable. The event was well organized and well run. I watched David Robbin and Dave Williams perform with great fascination and the "matrix effect" dove release was a kick. The wedding guests where somewhat in awe of the plethora of cameras as they arrived, but never took notice of us once they were seated and the ceremony got under way. At the end of the evening, the bridal couple (delightful people) laughed and cried (and cried!) as they watched the von Lanken's SDE. Contrary to the expectations of many, this event certainly did the profession no harm, and quite possibly did us a lot good. Kudos to the Sacramento PVA and, yes, WEVA.

Chuck

ps. They even fed us well, with an upscale box lunch and a nice evening buffet.

Sony mkaes a rubber piece that enlarges the diameter of the mic. You can call them for the part or simply cut a piece of rubber from a bike tube. Very similar.
