New MAC and Bootcamp questions Can't Post

I am looking to make the jump from PC to MAC (Quad core 2.66), but need to bridge the gap a little bit in regards to NLE's (currently Sony Vegas, switch to FCP), so I need to rn Bootcamp on the MAC.

When I order my MAC from MacMall online, it asks me to select my partitioning for both Windows and Mac OS. My hard drive will be 250GB, with an additional 500GB drive (more to come later).

How much should I partition XP for when running Vegas and Soundforge 9? I know the minimum is 5GB. But does my partition only needed for running XP and the selected programs?

So can I just alot 50-100GB to the XP partition and still be able to read and write to any of the internal drives?

Or, do I have to have the alottled drive space put aside for both OS's/programs/storage?

I would love to jump right into a 3.0 Quad or 8 core MAC. but they are just out of my reach. As I also need a new monitor (I have a great but old Mitsubishi 17 CRT). And also going to reinvest in external storage (removable drive SATA array) (I currently have 1TB external Raid0 FW800/USB2 drive. But it's formatted to PC NTFS).

To be on the safe side I'd recommend at least 40-50 GB for the Windows partition, since even that can fill up fairly quickly these days. Did you get your computer yet, and if so how is Boot Camp working out for you?

Yeah I got the system the other day but haven't been able to hook it up yet. I did configure all new hardware and loaded new software on at work with my tech guys.
I have to reconfigure my workspace to accomadate the larger CPU. I currently have 2 CPU's, but my old computer that's going in the trash has a smaller footprint than both of the other systems, so the MAC won't fit into the same space underneath my desk (a stupid back support bar for the desk is in the way. I have a Studio RTA glass L workstation.). I already have a 24 Dell monitor, pair of M-Audio DX-4 speakers, Belkin KVM, JVC MiniDV/SVHS deck, '13' JVC productions monitor, 3-1 DVD duplication tower, and scanner on the desktop. And a small safe, with printer on top of it, 2 CPUs, metal cube storage cabinet on wheels underneath the desk. I am eyeing betting rid of the Mini DV/SVHS deck and getting a new (much smaller footprint) Sony HVR-M15U HDV deck (I can still play record DV/DVCAM mini/fullsize tapes or HDV tapes) since I wil be making the migration to HDV in the coming year.

I had it partitioned with 50GB for XP and 200GB for OSX.
I am not goint to have too many XP programs on this system (XP, Sony Vegas, Soundforge 9, System Mechanic 7, Flix Pro and Wilform FX. My current storage drive is 500 GB for both OS's and MAC Drive loaded on the XP partition so I can read and write to MAC formatted disks. I will be adding more storage later on in the form of internal and external SATAII Raid array.

I still have my current PC that will now become (eventually backup system) and personal buisiness system. This will be my main PC system and the MAC wil become my workstation. especially when I migrate fully to Final Cut Studio 2. Smile

And a funny thing about Bootcamp. When we booted up my new MAC system the other day Windows XP loaded instead of Bootcamp or OSX. We just held down the "option" key when rebooting and Bootcamp came up and I was tehn able to choose which OS I wanted with no problems. And not BTW it loads OSX on bootup by default unless I want to use bootcamp. I am not expecting any hiccups with this system as I know many who are doing heavy 3D work with bootcamp and love it.

I might pickup and load Paralles on it just so I can run some basic Windows apps if needed. But would need bootcamp for apps that require full CPU power.
