RAID on motherboard vs. controller card Can't Post

Does anyone have any comparison of the read/write performance of the NVIDIA SATA RAID 0 on the ASUS motherboards, vs. the PCI-X SATA II RAID controller from 3Ware?

can't give you comparisons on these. We use pci raid 8 port sata cards by 3ware have 4 of them in a video security system server. It is recording approx 250 GB an hour. Hav had no problem with throughput. Have had more problems ith hard drives, being able to sustain read/write of that much data 24 hrs a day 365 days a year.

Thanks. I, too, used an IDE 3Ware controller in my previous computer. It worked fine...but I'm looking for some hard numbers before I lay out another $300 for its SATA successor, especially since my motherboard comes with two RAIDs of its own.

What do you need your RAID to do? I use Asus motherboards in my editing computers with on-board RAID controllers. I have almost 4,000 GB of ATA133 IDE drives in swap trays, so I use the IDE RAID controller....not even SATA.

I get plenty of throughput to routinely edit multiple streams of DV using Edius. I'm quite happy to continue getting use of my considerable investment in garden-variety IDE drives. And since I am very satisfied with the realtime performance I'm getting, I see no need to change.

If your requirements sound similar to mine, I'd have to advise you that it probably doesn't matter which controller you use.

However, when we migrate into HD, the whole story will change. We'll be right back to where we were with hard drives and realtime performance issues a few years ago when DV was new, and PC's and hdd's had little horsepower.

I'm looking for HDV support from this setup, Case.

Editing system is Vegas.

HD performance....then I'd agree that you need as much performance as you can get.

I too will never assemble another editing PC that does not have the horsepower for HD. To edit with any realtime, you will need multi-drive RAID A/V storage. At 100 MB/sec sustained, you will be just getting started with what you need to edit several HQ streams in realtime.

It's a whole new game from DV. It's like starting all over again. $4,000+ workstations with enough horsepower. RAID manditory. The good news is that in five years, the equipment will probably be cheap and simple again by the standards then.

Re: [Case] RAID on motherboard vs. controller card [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, anyway, I want as much performance as I can get WITHOUT spending $4,000-5,000. Smile This machine is a single dual core Athlon processor, fx64 4800+. To get more oomph, we'd be talking dual processors and a lot more $$.

But, back to the original question...since I'm trying to maximize performance with this machine (within budgetary limits), I'm still looking for any hard data on the performance increase (if any) of using a PCI-E RAID card like 3Ware vs. using the onboard RAID controller.
