There are some effects that you can use to achieve the misty look. I tend to color correct/grade my footage first and then add a glow filter, which softens and pops the whites. This gives a soft misty effect, and works great for times when you have over exposed shots that you can't help, like bright windows behind your subject. Keep in ind to achieve certain looks sometimes, you very well might use 2-3 filters in combination to get the desired effect you are going after. Weather in FCP or Vegas, I tend to use at least 1-2 filters on a lot of my footage for grading purposes.
