You can't compare MPEG2 and DV bitrates, because they are two completely different compression schemes. DV uses an intraframe compression of about 5.5:1. MPEG2 uses an interframe compression scheme. It compresses I frames in much the same way as DV, but then goes on to record only the things that have changed since the last I frame for several following frames. This drastically reduces the data, which is why you can get great looking images at 6.5 mb/sec (vs. DV's 25 mb/sec). HD-DVD and Blu-Ray do use higher data rates than SD DVDs. However, I'm not at all sure that recording SD video to these formats at bitrates higher than 9 mb/sec will result in an improved image. Regards, Doug Graham Panda Productions
