Still More Adventures in Computer Building Can't Post

Well, my new machine is fast, quiet, and clean...but it's got issues. Mad

What's happening is that most of the files that I download from the web are corrupt, or at least the computer thinks they are. So I'm having great difficulty in installing updated software and drivers.

I initially suspected the RAM, but it passes MEMTEST86 with flying colors. (DOCMEM crashes on opening, but I think that's because it's so outdated it won't handle my RAM, either because of speed or size).

The most likely culprit is one or more of the Win XP updates I downloaded (my XP disk is the original version, and it takes a ton of updating to bring it up to currency). Rather than go through and try to diagnose where the problem is, I'm thinking it might be easier to simply wipe the machine and start over, using a copy of Win XP with Service Pack 2 on the CD.

Suggestions are welcome. Smile

What brand of hard drive is it? Do you have multiple drives? If so, save the downloaded file to another drive and try that.. I would also recommend a HD utility from the Manufacturer to verify the drives integrity..

Maxtors. Already tried saving to a different drive; same problem. Also, the fact that this ONLY happens to downloaded files, not files transferred from CD-ROM or from elsewhere on the network, leads me to think it's related to the communications software

So far, the only thing I've downloaded has been software. So, .zip files and self-extracting .exe files.

Hrm.. maybe install WinZip or WinRAR it could be an association issue with the internal zip handler within XP..

Well, it must've been something corrupted in Windows. A clean install seems to have fixed the problem. Smile

Yeah I had that happen before it was associated with the internal XP .ZIP Compression scheme.. I did a clean install also..:)
