VCR records only audio Can't Post

All of a sudden, my VCR will only record or play the audio portion of the tape. What are some of the possible reasons for this behavior?

If it's both on the record and playback side, the most likely culprit is the video heads. These are located on the spinning head drum, and are quite delicate.

You'll need to take the machine to the shop. If it's an ordinary consumer VCR, you may be better off just tossing it and buying a replacement.

If it's just record, or just playback, it could also be a bad connector or cable.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's just snow on the record and playback. Unfortuatly it is the VCR side of a VCR/DVD recorder that I paid $700 for.

Snow? On a modern video device? Zero signal should produce a blue screen, not snow. Snow is generally RF static from a tuner that isn't connected to an antenna, or is tuned to a blank channel.

Let's do a bit more investigation.
1. Play back a commercial DVD. OK?
2. Play back a tape recorded on some other VCR, or a commercial tape from Blockbuster. OK? If not, it's the playback heads or something in the tape transport mechanism.
3. If step 2 worked OK, try recording a tape from DVD. What's the result? If it's snow, it could be that you simply have something wrong in the setup, and are recording from an unconnected RF input, rather than the DVD. If it works OK, then
4. Try recording a tape from a signal on an external input. If you get snow, then once again check your setup.

1. Play back a commercial DVD. OK? DVD side works great (so the connections are OK) 2. Play back a tape recorded on some other VCR, or a commercial tape from Blockbuster. OK? If not, it's the playback heads or something in the tape transport mechanism. Just get snow and audio
3. If step 2 worked OK, try recording a tape from DVD. What's the result? Still snow If it's snow, it could be that you simply have something wrong in the setup, and are recording from an unconnected RF input, rather than the DVD. DVD and VCR are the same unit, no outside connection between them. If it works OK, then
4. Try recording a tape from a signal on an external input. Still snow and audio If you get snow, then once again check your setup.

I don't know if this is significant. The problem began when I got to the end of a rented movie, rewound it, put in another tape and ....nothing since. Some folks are telling me that my heads could have gotten gummed up (it was a very old rented tape (not in the greatest shape). I tried cleaning with a head cleaner (with brushes), but to no avail.

Well, darn. Since it won't even play tapes that you KNOW have a signal on them, and a head cleaner didn't work, it's Repair Shop time, I'm afraid. Mad
