Video Computer Can't Post

Hello All,

I use Avid/Liquid 7.0 and need to upgrade my computer. I was looking at an HP, do you think this one will meet/exceed my needs.

Click Here to see HP I am looking at.

Thanks!

The short answer is yes. The specs on the HP you are looking at seems impressive.

Look more closely at the Avid website to see if there are motherboards and video cards that you need to be aware of that don't work well with Avid.
Chances are that computer will do you nicely for years to come.

Cheers!

Also, you might want to add a drive just for video that is not the OS drive... not something that is a must but it helps.

But Andrew is right... make sure that the motherboard is on the compatible list.

I have a 8200 from the their workstation line. I would at least recommend using something from their line like this.

With NLE's today they are all based on what can the computer do. The rule of thumb... The faster the CPU the better. The faster the transfer rate from the HD the better (Usually a raid). The faster the memory the better.

Now with this said over clocking is not a good idea for video computers. There are those that have done it and it works but it is a gamble at best.

I would have to disagree with the overclocking part.

If your using a vanilla no editing card Premiere Pro overclock away along as you know your memory is rated higher, video card can handle it and cpu doesn't mind. There is alot less stress on the video cards from video editing compared to say playing Battlefield 2.

You know... you reminded me that it was on machines with a Video Capture Card in them.

Good catch :)

Yeah typically Matrox and other editing cards are created to be forgiving of pushing the PCI bus in those cases, so once it increases those card say, "WTF"

That's more than adequate, but I would also do an additional search on the Avid Liquid forums. There's lots of discussion about video cards. Liquid uses the video card for a lot of its rendering and performs much better with ATI cards. Others have had success with nVidia, but many have not. It's critical you get the right card if you want background rendering. And you really really want background rendering.

that computer comes with a removable extra hard drive. its called a personal media drive. it has a normal internal hard drive, but it comes with an additional one that goes in the front. it is usb compatible and with the os drive adds up to 500 gb.

For SD (DV) you are more than fine. For HDV you are going to be a little short. Is it in your plans in the near future to go HD? If not then you are going to be fine :)

Read this..it should help.

http://www.avid.com/products/liquid/specs.asp

also just found this...If you want good avid support...stick to a certified system.
What type of system do I need to run Avid Liquid software ?
Please see Avid Liquid specifications for the latest system information on Avid Liquid software. Key factors in choosing a system for Avid Liquid software include: 1GB system memory, a latest - generation graphics card with at least 128MB memory for SD operation and 256MB memory for HD , and a USB2 controller for Avid Liquid Pro hardware. The Avid Liquid Chrome HD product is only certified today on the HP XW8200 workstation.
