NTSC COLOR VIDEO MONITOR 4 DVCAM Can't Post

I am thinking about purchasing a video monitor, and don't know very much about it at all. I know that they are helpful when editing in getting accurate color, but that is about all I know. What should I be looking for? Can this monitor connect right to the computer, or do you have to make a DVD and then play it through to the monitor? Is Videotek a good brand? What else should I be asking? Thanks, Jim

What monitor to get depends on your budget.

You can use an ordinary TV set, and pay $100-200 or so. Try to find one with easily adjusted hue and saturation controls, and one that has S-video (or even component video) and audio RCA jacks. Calibrate it using color bars from your NLE and the helpful article in the VU library.

A true production monitor has several advantages over a consumer TV. However, it will also cost you $650 - 1200 or more. Production monitors have more resolution, better color reproduction, and tools such as "blue gun only", "cross pulse", and "underscan" to help you calibrate the monitor and examine certain technical aspects of your video signal. They also have metal cases that help eliminate interference from nearby magnetic and electronic equipment, like your computer monitor. The Sony "PVM" series of monitors is considered by many to be an "industry standard", but production monitors are also made by Panasonic and JVC. Videotek monitors are NOT production quality, but intended more for things like security camera monitors.

You generally can't hook the monitor directly to your computer, unless you have an editing system that supports this, usually with some form of proprietary capture/accelerator card or a breakout box. With Vegas, you simply connect the monitor to your DV camcorder or deck. The signal goes out to the DV device via Firewire, and gets converted to an analog signal and sent to the monitor.

Doug and others,

Does Vegas allow you to produce color bars? I can't find it listed in the help index. My cam will produce color bars, but only gray, yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red, and blue. It doesn't show the 3.5, 7.5, 11.5, etc. listed in the article Doug mentioned in the Free Library. Thanks, Jim

Vegas has NTSC bars (and 1K audio tone, too, if you need it.) I think they're under the Media Generators tab.

Thanks, Doug. They were under Media Generators. I was searching for "color bars." Vegas titles them SMPTE Bars (NTSC). I appreciate your help. Jim

As the Bear mentioned. The best way to calibrate a monitor is with "blue only" and SMPTE color bars. As an experiment and for home use I purchased some THX Optimizer blue only glasses: http://www.co-store.com/thx At work here I set up my Sony PVM-14M2U monitor with SMPTE bars, verified my "blue Only" with the monitor switch and then compared to the glasses and it was a match. So I took them home. If any of you have the DVD Toy Story or A Bugs Life there is a menu option for THX which gives a nice range of test patterns including SMPTE bars which you can use these glasses on to calibrate your home TV's.

Re: [Tim] NTSC COLOR VIDEO MONITOR 4 DVCAM [In reply to] Can't Post

Tim, thanks. I ordered a pair of the glasses just to see if they help me get a little more accurate color. Jim
