dv 500 plus -premier 6 problems Can't Post

I've never had these issues but they are plaguing my current project I am producing for a local school district. When my computer starts up, I used to get color bars in color on my monitor all the time, until I started up Premiere 6 and then the monitor came up with my work. I think that is a separate problem and it doesn't seem like too big a deal because I recently completed another project and it worked fine. The real problem is this new project that I was planning to complete over the holidays. Now deadline is here and I've got issues! Frown There are black flashes that pop up throughout my project. I have a Pentium 1.8 gig 256 megs of ram and I've done several projects without problems. I don't know if I need to streamline my machine because it is a "family" computer and the kids load various junk on it. I just am at my wits end because it has worked fine until now! I do have a separate hard drive for video and all my project is on that drive. I went to the Pinnacle web site and "disabled write-behind caching for all drives" but I don't know where to go from here. I think I have my wife convinced its time to get a new computer and editing program (any suggestions?) but I need to get this project wrapped up first to help fund the upgrade!

Check to make sure that the black flashes are on the captured video, not on the source tape(s).

Turn off any networking functions. Disconnect from the Internet and turn off any instant messaging programs. Turn off antivirus monitoring. Turn off any other TSR software...anything that runs in the background. If you have spyware and up-to-date antivirus software, run them and delete anything they turn up.

Turn off Indexing on your video storage drives.

If you suspect that Premiere is the problem, you can delete the preferences file (prem60.prf) and then restart the program. You'll have to re-enter all your preferred settings.

Everything that Doug says is good advice. To add on to that, sometimes we found that on DV500 systems, you can fix black flashes by exporting the finished timeline as a single DV file. I had to support 4 DV500 systems, and although they were dedicated just to editing and fully optimized, they would sometimes do what you are talking about.
