A mic mixer would have a pre-amp that should bring the microphone inputs up to a line level for connection to a line input. It would be great if you were using balanced mics, but if you've gotten along without them for this long, obviously noise isn't a problem for you. There are several ways you can go about hooking up your microphones, but the one I'd recommend is that you buy a microphone mixer that will provide the preamplification, and output to stereo, with pan controls for the separate mic inputs. That way, you can not only control the volume from each mic, but you can control it's stereo position (left channel, right channel, or somewhere in the middle). As long as the camcorder has a line in, and your mixer has a line out, you should get minimal noise pickup between the mixer and the camcorder, because the signal between them will be amplified well above the noise level (except in very noisy conditions). I don't, however, know if the VX-2000 will record from it's line in when in camcorder mode. My camcorder uses the XLR inputs exclusively when in camcorder mode (vs. VTR mode), but the XLR inputs can be switched to line levels; you just need to have adaptors. p.s. If you could tie your microphone cables together and get a decent level by plugging them straight into the camera, then your mic mixer was not doing any amplification; or maybe the camcorder was auto-sensing the input level and treating it as a line input, even though the level wasn't quite up to line levels. --- Douglas Toltzman Hubert, NC
