home network Can't Post

I;m trying to get my new laptop on the wireless network.
It says it's working and indeed I can get on the internet throught the same network as the other four computers in teh house, but I can't seem to get my new laptop on the same WORKGROUP.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong? (Please don't advise me to use the "network setup wizard".)
I'm on Windows XP, as are the rest of the computers.

thanks,

Andrew

are the rest of your computers on the same wireless access point, to where they recieve the same network ip address scheme? and is the workgroup name the same on all computers. Is Your firewall setup to allow access from that computers IP address?

paul, thanks for replying.
Yes, Yes, Yes and I don't know.

More info for you:
I have two desktops (DT1, DT2) and a wireless laptop (LT1). I just acquire another laptop (LT2) which is the computer with the problem.
DT1, DT2, and LT1 are all connected to the same Netgear router and connects to the internet via DSL modem.
DT1, DT2, and LT1 are all on the same workgroup and can share files with ease.

Enter LT2.
From the My Network Place folder on LT2, I can see DT1 and DT2's shared folders but cannot access them. I cannot see LT2 at all.
I can connect to the internet via the wireless connection on LT2 and it says the name of the network and shows the IP address. It matches the rest of the computers.
When I click on "View Workgroup Computers" I get an error message denying me access.

If I try to run: \\<name_of_computer> where name_of_computer is a known computer on my network, I get an error. The other computers (DT1, DT2, and LT1 can see each other on the "View Workgroup Computers" but do not see LT2.

Very strange.
Ideas?

Thanks, again.

I assume you enabled File Sharing on LT2 right? So can LT1 see and access DT1 and DT2 while LT2 is surfing along on the internet?

I would double-check your WORKGROUP information on LT2. Typically when LT2 can see other machines but can't access them it's because LT2 is on another subnet than the other machines. Such as if you have a Router and then Plugged in a Vonage router and then plugged in a machine to the vonage router. It would be a different subnet by default.

So double-check your WORKGROUP Information and make sure it's workgroup and not domain..:)

Gee, I just turn my computers on, went into the control panels, turned on AirPort, it all works.

That is because they were setup correctly...

I turn on my 4 networked PC's everyday and they just work.

Mac's can get as screwed up on a network as any PC.

In this case it was a friendly-overkill-toomanyoptions-overhead-cpucyclestealing Virus/Firewall program that couldn't tell friendly LAN machines from those evil WAN machines.. So the solution was to disable the software(recommended) or modify the settings to allow the MAC's of your local lan to use MS File and Sharing.

In my opinion Windows Firewall does a fine job and well if your behind a NAT router your sitting even that much better. Typically now days everything is NAT, but 4-5 years ago some routers didn't feature NAT so that kinda sucked.. As for antivirus, I always stay true to AntiVir www.freeav.com . It's free, definitions are free and it's low overhead.

Of course with that said, if your a P2P type of guy, then Zonealarm might be good for the non-network savvy.
