question on mic removal vx2000 Can't Post

I recently purchased a Sony vx2000 for shooting skydiving footage. I am replacing a trv 27 so the quality should be much improved. in freefall videography we use a helmet as our shooting platform, the vx2000 would fit in my helmet if I could remove the mic back to the handle. the problem is I still need audio so I need to relocate the mic. Is this possible without destroying my camera? a new helmet goes for around $700.US
any help would be appreciated

You can remove the onboard mic...one of my friends did this to fit a VX style camcorder into an underwater housing.

Rather than relocating the stock mic, I'd use a small lavaliere mic element, plugged into the external mic jack, and secured to your helmet with duct tape.

But...what sort of audio do you get in free fall, anyway? I'd think there would be almost nothing but wind noise!

thanks for your reply
certainly the freefall portion is windnoise. the video also includes prejump interviews and post jump.
do I have to clip any wires to the mic?

The lavalier mic element has a permanently-attached wire that terminates in a 1/8" miniplug. This plug goes into the camcorder's external microphone jack.
For your application, you might want to shorten the mic wire, so there's no excess. You might also want to have some way of securing the plug into the camcorder's jack. As a minimum, use a "right angle" style plug, and tape the plug to the camcorder body.
