too quiet feature sound audio

In 2000 I shot a feature film on 16mm and recorded sound on a minidisc recorder. For those of you who use irivers, you know what I'm working with. My soundman was so concerned with digital distortion by peaking the levels he turned the record level astronomically low. How low, you might ask? I had to play the audio out of the minidisc thru a guitar amp cranked to the max, and ran a line out of the amp into my computer's sound card. Even then, Ihad to normalize the sound in Premiere, export it to another wav file reimport it then normalize it again to get the sound where it should be. Eventually I used audio cleaner to try and remove the massive room level rumble from all the boosting. And the sound was barely passive. Now, I'm trying to redo the movie from the ground up. I have software to remove some of the 16mm grain and tools to make the video's levels where I want them. I am still left with the unbelievably soft sound. Is there a better way to bring my sound to an appropriate level than the guitar amp/double-normalizing route? I tried a direct capture and using an audio program to normalize the audio, but the room rumble was five times louder than the dialogue. Is there an audio plug-in that might amplify the sound to a normal level? I edit on Avid Liquid and have Adoble Audition 1.0 as well as Soundsoap. Garrett
