trouble with external hd	Can't Post

Used external HD for quite awhile with no problems. All of a sudden, it will not show up on my computer when I plug it in. I've been using it on the Mac, but also tried it on my PC and it still does not show up. It seems to sound normal, but it just doesn't show up. It is a Western Digital and does not need a power cord. I've even tried different USB cables. Any suggestions?

Well, I figured out how to use disk warrior and got my files off the hd & trashed it. Thought I would post in case anyone else had the same problem.

Someone told me external hd are only good for a few years. Does anyone know that to be true?
