FOR SALE: Sony DV-CAM/MiniDV/VHS/SVHS firewire deck Can't Post

I am selling a Sony WV-DR7 deck that is in excellent condition with very little usage. Original packaging and English manual included.

Highlights:

Playback: Mini-DV, Full DV, DV-CAM, S-VHS, and VHS.
Record: Mini-DV, Full DV, DV-CAM, S-VHS, and VHS.
Record in both SP or LP mode.
Head-to-head dubbing
19 micron heads on SVHS/VHS side
SVHS Reality Regenerator
TBC
Jog/shuttle on deck and remote
DV/1394 Firewire connection
LANC Terminal Control
Works with MAC or PC

<The WV-DR7 is touted for its ability to make excellent DV-to-SVHS or VHS copies>

<Improved digital noise reduction/TBC, as well as circuitry which Sony calls "Digital Reality Regenerator". Bcause of this circuitry or and the direct head-to-head signal path, the WV-DR7 makes very good VHS copies of DV source material, and vice versa. Dubs produced by the deck were as good as, or even slightly better than, dubs made by passing the DV signal via S-video cable to a Studio One proc amp and detail enhancer, and from there into my six-deck dub rack.>

<Your editing system can control the WV-DR7 via the Firewire connection>

This deck is a Japanese model with Japanese controls. However, an English manual is provided.
<Japanese electronics manufacturers have a long history of putting the US market in last place when it comes to introducing new technology. Many products are available in the Japanese or the European markets before US consumers can get them. Some products never make it to our shores at all.> <I quickly became used to the labels on the unit. I find that I only rarely have to refer back to the manual, if I need to do some task which I haven't done in a long time. Still, it's a good idea to keep the manual in a handy spot.>

<excerpts from an article by Doug Graham.> To read the full article on the Sony WV-DR7 visit http://www.creativecow.net/...m_doug/wv_dr7review/

This deck does NOT record DVCam. And a few years ago they were selling NEW for $1700 delivered in the US.

I know that a few years ago they were selling these things new for $1,700. (They even dropped to about $1500 for a while) But now they are in higher demand and harder to get a hold of. I have watched 3 of these units sell on ebay for $1,700-$1,900.

Also, it does record to DV-CAM tapes. I have done it several times including today. Worked perfectly.

I know it'll record to DVCAM tapes, but are you sure that it's doing so in DVCAM, or is it just recording in DV? You should be able to tell by the recording time. DV will get 30% more on a given tape than DVCAM.

If that's confusing, let me try to put it another way. There are two "components" to DVCAM. There's the DVCAM tape itself. Sony sells a line of DVCAM tapes, intended specifically for use with DVCAM equipment and supposedly "better" in several ways than regular DV tape. BUT: You can record on a DVCAM tape with a regular DV camcorder or deck, with no problems. There's nothing really special about it, except that it's a higher grade of tape.

Then there's the DVCAM format itself. In this format, information is recorded at a steeper track pitch, and the linear tape speed is about 30% higher than the DV format. As far as I know, only DVCAM equipment can actually record in DVCAM mode, although several of Sony's DV decks can play back DVCAM material.

But you're right about the prices. Since this deck was discontinued, demand for the few remaining units has pushed the asking price up.

The fellow is either trying to put one over on a potential buyer or does not understand what "records DVCam" means. The decks do not record DVCam. As you suggested he just may be confused and not understand the difference between recording on a DVCam tape with a DV signal and actually recording in the DVCam format. I own a couple of them and paid $500 for the last one off the net.

You are right: I should have put "record to DV-CAM tapes" as it does do that. I am not sure if it is in the DV or DV-CAM format, which to me does not matter. Most of the people interested in this deck are going to be filming in Mini-DV; The 60 minute Mini-DV tapes are the most affordable but limit you in length. The beauty of this unit is that it will allow you to record your Mini-DV tapes onto a longer DV-CAM tape so that you can keep all your footage on one tape rather than multiple Mini-DV tapes. For instance wedding videos that exceed 1 hour would either have to be split onto two mini-dv tapes or recorded to just one DV-CAM tape. This makes it perfect for archiving projects.

And just so you know, I had three people request to buy the unit. I ended up selling it for $1,750 plus shipping.

I was not trying to pull a fast one on any buyers. I made it clear in the e-mails sent to them that I was not sure if it recorded in DV-CAM or DV format on the DV-CAM tapes. It didn't matter to any of them as they all said they shoot in the Mini-DV format.
