Flying with a camera & housing Can't Post

I am scheduled to leave for a diving vacation in a few days and have been thinking how best to travel with my camera and housing. Normally I would just carry my PD150 with me as a carry on. I am now debating whether I should just put the camera in its Ikelite housing and bring it aboard as a carry on. Is this a good, middling or really stupid idea? Any experience appreciated.

Thanks.

I do, but I carry the camera in it's bag as my "personal item". I have the biggest airline approved rollerbag, in it goes my housing, reg, computer and clothes for padding. Since I have a poly housing with electronics embedded in it, I pretty much get hand-checked at every checkpoint.

Also my housing mfr. warns not to mount the camera in the plastic base during travel, they warn that sudden movement could crack the mounting strip or crack the camera mounting hole - ymmv.

An interesting point about carrying the camera in the housing. I'll have to check the housing manual. I think the construction is OK with the camera getting support from both ends and the bottom but definately worth taking a look at. If I take handles off the housing I can fit it in a rolling bag with some room to spare. I can imagine that I will spend some time going through security.

Thanks for your comments.
