Overexposed: is it just the conditions? Can't Post

Hi all,
I'm very new to underwater video having picked up an old housing and Sony CCD-V9 video 8 camera off ebay to play around. I've been taking it out to my local lake which is very murky, around 5' vizibility on a good day. The problem I'm having is that the sun is like a spotlight and overexposing everything. I'm only going down to about 20' so I'm hoping that maybe these are just not the optimum conditions to film in. Haven't really had it anywhere else so I can't compare but I'd like to take it to the Bahamas this summer. Is it just the conditions that are causing the overexposure or do I need to adjust something?
Thanks,
Tony

I'll venture a comment. Auto exposure cameras and camcorders (which include just about all of them nowadays) typically adjust for an overall mid-tone grey. Unfortunately, when they see a bright spot of light in a larger and darker scene, they don't have the intelligence to know to adjust for that bright spot of light. They just "average" the entire scene. Some are smarter than others at this, but if you want to expose for some thing a lot lighter or darker than the average in a scene, you'll have to manually adjust it.
