Quest Video Housing Can't Post

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and have a Quest Housing (they are now out of business) which appears to have just experienced a control problem with my Canon Optura. The control switchs (after working fine for several years) now have no effect on the camcorder.

Any troubleshooting suggestions or places that can effect repairs would be appreciated.

Try Seacam Subsea Systems. I think the owner used to own Quest and they still use the same type four position sliding magnetic "L" control setup. He might help you.

I have been in touch with Quest. The number is 1-800-664-0409. Give it a try. Good luck.

Re: [eanetb] Quest Video Housing [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi eanetb , I have just bought the Quest Housing for Optura but I don't have the manual. I know that the four way control switch can control REC/PAUSE, AF OFF, TELE AND WIDE ZOOM. But that means I have to open the housing and switch on the camcorder the moment before entering water. Is there any other way of doing it? Some other housing say that their four way switch can control 12 functions. Can the switch on the Quest housing control more than the four functions I know of? Thank you.

Plug in the lanc plug into camera, set the switch on the camera to "camera". The camera is now on. Pushing the 4 position slide switch on the housing forward and holding it controls off and stand-by. The use of the forward position is the key. If I remember correctly, pushing it forward and holding it there for 4 seconds turns it off. Practice.

Realfish's instructions are correct. Just turn the camera to on in the camera position. Close the housing. Hold the Right hand switch forward until the power light and monitor go out. When you want to turn it on, go push it forward until it comes back on. If you leave it on by mistake, don't worry as the camera turns off by itself after about 5 minutes of standby. This can be a little problem when UW and it off and then the good subject comes into rangeSmile

Look at the letters around the ring of the control. If there's a PA, then you have power on-off control and Autofocus on-off on the same joystick point. If it's PAB also then you have White Balance cycling as well. Pushing the stick once quickly cycles autofocus on/off, pushing and holding it 2-3 seconds then releasing allows cycling through your white balance settings and pushing and holding it till the camera shuts off works as previously described to turn the power off. Some Quest housings with dual joysticks also control the functions of a Citizen Datascreen Monitor and provide Near/Far focus control.

I have a 2001 Bentley(taken over by Quest in 2000) 375GL manual in Acrobat PDF format that someone scanned for me that describes all this as well as all other typical functions of their housings. It's a little contradictory, but still useful, let me know if you'd like a copy.

I had a similar problem last summer. After fooling around with it awhile, I noticed that the position of the plug in the jack made a difference. Every time I plug it in with the cable pointing nearly straight down, it works flawlessly, when pointed to the side it doesn't work at all. Go figure. Maybe yours is the same - I've read the controls themselves are really basic and should last indefinitely.

Hope this works for you,

Thanks everyone. It's great! I can turn it on and off with the switch now. However, I still can't get the white balance function. It's either autofocus off or turn off though I have the letters PAB next to the switch. I am using a Canon MV1. Has anyone tried the switch on this camcorder?
Steve, would you mind sending the manual to kwoklh@newsgroup.com.hk? Thank you.

I don't have the white balance control on my housing so I can't help with it. I would think that if your camcorder supports the LANC protocol that it should work though.

I sent the manual earlier tonite,

Though I also owned an original Optura, I don't remember if it had a manual white balance adjust feature. If it has only automatic, you can't adjust the w/b using the slide switch on the housing. Check the camera instructions.
