Sony Sports Pack Can't Post

Hola everyone,

This summer I will be spending 4 months paddling a sea kayak in the Sea of Cortez (see the forum at www.BajaCaliforniaConservation.org for details). I have a Sony TRV900 that I will be taking along. Because of the nature of this trip I'd like to be able to shoot underwater video while snorkeling.

I've been looking at IKELITE and the Sony Sports Pack Underwater housing for the DCR-TRV. I'd love to get the Ikelite, but need to consider my budget.

So, Does anyone have opinions as to the quality and durability of the Sony Sports Pack?

Thanks for your comments!

Given the nature of the conditions you'll be in, I'd go with a Sports-Pack type housing. Since the Ikelite is a dive housing, designed to exceed several hundred feet, it would be overkill for what you need, and surprisingly might be a worse choice for the rough conditions since it has an exposed front port that's easily scratched and a sealing mechanism since that's designed for pressure, but not rough conditions. With my housing(not an Ike) I always have the boat crew hand it to me once I'm in the water, I don't jump off the boat with it for fear that the shock will cause the rear seal to leak. Yet my housing works to 350'.

I generally don't even open my dive housing on the boat or anywhere except a clean dry area, Dirt/sand/dried salt on the seals is likely to cause leaks. Take a lot of silicone grease, diveshops sell it in a handy little round plastic case the size of a thick quarter, mine is 1/4" oz. made by McNett, the brand is Aquaseal.

I don't have any experience with the Sony Sports Packs though, except to say that I've read of people using them to about 7-10' underwater, which kind of surprised me.

Another option is a surf housing, Epic makes an affordable one www.epiccam.com Or the rugged Aquacam housing from Aquatix. www.aquatix.com. Both of their websites show housings being used by kayakers so they're designed for your situation.

Sounds like a great trip,

sjspeck,

thanks very much for the comments! i've gone ahead and ordered the sports pack. my plan is to use it when there are whale sharks, dolphins, whales etc. swimming about. i figure i can use it when i snorkle from shore or have it ready to go in the sea kayak and hold it over the side. for a trip like this i sure don't want to miss what's under water too!

thanks again,

I've had a couple of the Sony Sports Paks - They're ok for kayaking, although there have been reports of cameras breaking loose inside the housings in rough water. They're certainly better than dedicated u/w housings for surface work, as they weigh significantly less. I would be very careful while snorkling with one. If possible, try and get an extra Lanc control for the housing - if this fails in Baja, the housing will no longer function.
