AE 5.5 training Can't Post

I have acquired AE5.5 and know that their is a steep learing curve to it. I was wondering if anyone had any recomendadions as to a good resource to get me up to speed with the fundamentals. I know their is the total training series but to be honest I am not ready to spend that much money on it yet. I would like to be able to just get the basics so tht I could do some minor effects for weddings and other small productions.

Two words: Trish Meyer
Go to your local B&N and pick up "Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects" by Trish Meyer
Excellent reference and tutorial

Hey Jason,
There are quite a few good books out there, the best is the one already mentioned (meyer's). Actually, they have 2 out but the second is probably not what you are looking for. You might want to look into buying the Total Training tapes that came out for AE version 4.1. You can probably get them really cheap on ebay (cheap compared to the new ones). It's about a 14 tape set and you can get them for around $100-$150. Yes, it's for the earlier version, but it will cover a lot of what you need to know. Also, check out Adobe.com, they have a great AE forum, as well as www.creativecow.net, they have the best AE community, as well as a large amount of tutorials. Let's see, you can also get the training CD's from www.vtc.com (or pay the monthly fee to train online). I just got the CD's last week and so far, they are great.
The best way I learn is to follow tutorials and projects online. You may not get what you are doing at first, but soon it just clicks.
Good Luck,
Eric Miozzi

Start with the Adobe Classroom in a Book. The After Effects version is outstanding for the new user.
Then move up to the Trish Meyer books.

Ahhhhh, After Effects ; ) Really cool program. Get ready for living on less sleep from now on....
VTC.com is a great place to start. First look at the FREE movies that you can view to see if it's what you're looking for. Jayse is a great teacher. If you have broadband I think you could justify getting one month of training and spending only $25.00. The movies are low res, so graphics aren't nearly what most would like them to be, BUT, all the essentials are there.
Trish Meyer's "Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects" is a must have for any AE cutter. I've got both books, and yes, the second one is WAYYYYY over the top for what most people are doing with AE. It's geared more towards production techniques. None the less, both are excellent and great additions to any graphics persons library.
Creative Cow is a great resource as well, though it's a veritable Peyton Place of gobledegook in some of the forums. My advice would be to lurk and learn while keeping quiet, otherwise Ron will throw you out on your ear....and I'm serious. ; )
If you're a well discipined cutter already with one of the better known NLE's, you'll adapt well to AE's interface. Keyboard shortcuts are paramount in keeping the clutter out of the picture. The Meyer's books are heavy into doing things with the keyboard. Once you realize what can be done with the "Uber" key, you'll be on your way.
All The Best,
Tim
