It's inherent to practically of the cameras, regardless of purchase location / reseller. The best thing right now is to contact the reseller and call Sony at the number I listed so it is properly documented. The more the better, and the greater the chance of Sony fixing things.

I'm supposed to be getting a call next week from one of the developers or something to that extent from wherever they're built...we'll see what happens.

With 825~ views, there are only a few posts to this? Makes no sense. I know some of you owners have called Sony, but there are a lot who have done nothing.

Here's another fun issue that I've now seen myself and others have been experiencing...someone else told me about this, and sure enough, it's consistent as well.

Film several short clips with the CF device and the beginning few frames will appear jagged or another color for some reason, and upon stopping recordation, you will lose part of the end of whatever is filmed. Some files cannot be brought into Premiere, either.

It's really disappointing that these issues are common throughout EVERY camera and nothing is being done about it yet...I'm supposed to be getting a call this coming week so we'll see what happens, but everyone who owns these cameras really needs to call Sony and make a case. Otherwise, nothing will get done.

The prevailing wisdom is to stay away from the first generation of any new technology. The first buyers are usually the final round of beta testers.

I agree that's important that people let Sony know they want this fixed! I think the reason for the 825 views and little posts is due to the fact that a lot of us are considering buying this camera and want to know what real users think of it. I know that's my reason for keeping on eye on these type of threads.Wink

Marshall I cannot see this with my footage, but will play with it today and see what I see. As far as people calling Sony, my experience as you know, was that I talked to a guy that just said I would have to send the camera in for repair. He really did not seem interested in the specifics of the problem with the zoom ring. I have not sent it in yet, and am waiting for Josh Philips to get back to us to see if he is finding anything else out. Any idea how many of us bought this camera through Josh?

It's basically all of the cameras, regardless of purchase. Give me a call, I'll tell you all about it!

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes Sony to acknowledge the problem.
As from my experience in the past they are VERY slow to take blame for camera defects (see V1U low audio, PD170 sensors etc.).

Re: [glimmer] ATTENTION TO ALL SONY Z7U OWNERS 03/17 update [In reply to] Can't Post

Well I have been testing the Z7 for the problems stated about short clips recorded to cf card having jagged edges and cutting off the end of the clip. I am not seeing this problem at all. I took 10 or so short clips this morning and brought them into fcp and see nothing wrong. I think any problems on this may be related to either the software, or the method of bringing in the clips. I know so far I am not able to use the cf attachment that came with the camera to import to fcp at all. I have a Firewire cf reader that I use. I have also really been watching the slow auto focus problems mentioned earlier and see no problems with that at all. I have always felt that Sony cameras had auto focus issues, and this camera is no different. So really right now the only problem I see is the play in the zoom ring while in servo mode. I still don't think it feels like it should be turned while in the servo mode though. It just feels like it is being forced in this mode. All I have for now though.

Bruce, I don't currently use the Sony CF reader, but did you know that Sony finally got a link posted for FCP and the CF unit?

Actually i think it is not really blown out of proportion at all. Any event where camera flash is used is very noticeable, especially if you have to do any slomo. It also creates big problems with any special FX and tracking shots for indie productions.

Bruce are you using a camera that has cmos sensors, and if so which one do you have?

Yes I did Michael. It doesn't work with the camera flash unit, but I have been using a firewire flash reader and it works great. I got 75 minutes to copy in 15 minutes.

I was hoping you were just speculating. Maybe my opinion will change once I do an actual wedding reception. I think though the bottom line is that cmos has this issue and doesn't seem like anything will be done about it very soon.

There are a lot of things I like about the camera, but along with the issues Marshall has already stated I am also very dissapointed that the zoom servo is INCREDIBLY slow compared to the Z1 and that Sony would put a different bayonet mount on it than they have on their other 72MM sony HDV cams forcing you to buy all new WA & FE adapters which are not cheap.

Maybe I am more content than I should be, but I am still not upset about most of the reported issues with this camera. Any slow focus issues are not much different than I had on the pd170. I always felt that camera sucked at auto focus. Honestly I never even noticed the slower zoom speed until you mentioned it. Come to think of it the only issues I would have been aware of on my own are the play in the zoom ring and the rolling shutter. Not sure if that makes some of the issues brought up just picky or not. Time will tell I guess. Thanks for you imput though. It is always good to hear what other people think.

Can someone check something for me.... Run your composite cable out to an external monitor and then in your Z7 display set menu turn the disp output to vout panel and tell me if your LCD display info now shows on the external monitor? Mine will show for a half second when i hit the menu button, but then the display goes to a clean feed without the camera settings info. This is useful for crane work among other things.....

I did check that all out when I first got the camera, since we run a remote controlled camera and everything worked fine.
