Adventures in HD editing Can't Post

We recently added an employee, which meant adding another edit system. I was looking for a cost effective solution and while it is not perfect, is has been very cost effective. I bought a Dell Vostro 400 from the Dell Outlet store for $449.

Here are some of the specs.
Core 2 Duo 2.33HGz, 4MB L2 Cache, 1333 FSB
2 GB Non-ECC SDRAM 800 MHz
250 GB SATA 7200 RPM primary drive
80 GB SATA 7200 RPM secondary drive
256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (2 DVI ports)
2 DVD drives.
Windows XP
Keyboard and mouse

I added a firewire card for about $15.00 and I replaced the 80 GB secondary drive with a 500 GB drive for about $100. So after all of that I have about $565 in the system. I already had Edius as well as monitors for audio and video.

We have done three HD edits on our laptop, but they were all short projects, a WDE, Bridal Elegance and a Trailer. We have just completed our first full HD edit and it was relatively painless. We had just under 5 hours of footage and it took about 140 GB with the Edius HQ codec. The completed project is about 50 minutes. The edit workflow was identical to SD projects with Edius, which was a huge relief. Delivering on Blu-ray will be another story, but the actual HD edit process was totally painless thanks to a $565 computer and Edius.

Hi Mark,

Always good to hear other people's HD editing experiences. Although Id' love to say we had a similar experience in Premiere Pro, the downconverting to SD without jaggies or other artefacts was a bit of an epic. Now we have a decent workflow we are quite happy with it. Editing was no different until the project got too large. Our first HD project had close to 8 hours of footageFrown. We did use native HDV editing which I guess puts more strain on the system, but only takes up the same amount of storage as SD. I guess we're in still in the stage of trade-offs.Unsure I definitely felt like I used a timemachine when I pressed 'render' before going to bedWink How are the render times from the Edius HQ codec?

I felt the same time warp last night when it took over an hour to render a 10 minute hd clip in Final Cut.

I am pretty new to the whole HD process, so I am hoping I have some settings wrong or something.

One of the funny things about editing in HD is how not a big deal it is. Especially these days and especially with Edius. Have you tried digizoom with your stationary cam yet? One of the tricks I picked up is to do a slow crawling digital zoom on the back camera using 3d Picture in Picture tool. Because you have more rez to work with in HD, it looks like there is someone manning that back camera even when there isn't. Try it out.

Are you editing native HDV? If so, try out an intermediate codec. You might have better luck and zippier editing.

Hi Chris

No it gets transcoded to Pro-Res in Final Cut Pro when I import it.

Hi Niels,

I'm sorry your earlier experience was not as painless. By render times, I assume you mean to convert for DVD. It took about 4 hours to make an mpeg for SD DVD from a 50 minute HD timeline. To make a Mt2 file took about 4 hours as well. I have not taken a project through the BluRay route yet. From the render times I have heard about, I may be looking for another $450 Dell just for encoding to BluRay.

I'm so glad I got to meet you at Video 08. As a little side benefit, when I read your posts, I can hear the accent in your voice. That idea may sound weird, but it makes the internet become a little more friendly and personal.

Hi Lee,

This edit is the first one that bought the HD edit upgrade. I don't have a BluRay burner of Encore 3, so we are taking the edit to tape and another company is make the BluRay discs for us. Watch for an article in Event DV on BluRay and Edius.

Hi Chris,

You are so right about Edius and HD. I have zoomed in to reframe a shot but I have not tried a slow crawling zoom with 3d PIP. Thanks for the idea. When do you leave for the big event?

Hi Mark,

That makes the render times very close to our workflow. We don't have a BluRay burner yet either, so far everyone that requested HD editing wanted a WMV or H264 file on a hard disk instead. I guess that might change now the format war is over. Interesting how many VU'ers have commented on my accent by now. I guess I have a new Unique Selling Point Wink

All the best,
Niels

Hi Mark

Rendering is maybe not the correct term. It is the process to make the mp2 flie I need to burn the dvd that is taking that long.

Hi Bruce,

That's not so bad, except for one thing...

I thought everything was faster, better and more expensive on a Mac.Wink

Okay, I take that back. VU hasn't had a good Mac vs. PC war in a while and I don't want to start one.

Seriously, those times are not too bad, a little slower than mine but not that much. If my math is correct, it would take over 5 hours for 50 mintes and mine was 4 hours for 50 mintes. If you make the mp2 while you are sleeping it doesn't really matter if it takes 4 or 5 hours. One cool thing about Edius is that I can change the timeline setting to SD and what took 4 hours for 50 minutes of encoding to mp2 now takes only about an hour. Computer will keep getting faster and our encode times will come down, that is until the next round of technology changes everything...again.

Hi Mark

Oh no not another mac pc war.

Actually creating the mp2 file on my older mac used to take 8 hours for an hour and 20 min. video. Then when I got the Intel Mac Pro the times for that improved to an hour or so and that has been wonderful. I guess now we are going back to the slower times again. So when you change the timeline to sd is that because you are using sd for the dvds? Sounds like something I can do in mac as well. I will have to try that. Thanks for the imput.
