Good thing we never talked couple nights ago because you would be getting EX1s. WinkWink

Seriously though, it sounds like the right cam for you. i will be very curious about the low light. If its even close to the EX1, then the only slight price difference may be justified because of the other features you mentioned.

I am so glad to hear you got to shoot with it!

Thats odd that Sony wouldnt make their own software work better with Vegas. Other than a weird hiccup where clips get duplicated, it works flawlessly with FCP.

LOL...the funny thing about where we met was what i was there to buy!!!! LaughLaughLaugh

Please check out this clip shot with the EX1 right out of the box 1 hour earlier...no lens adapters, no tricks in post.

H Lou, Yes. I thought that the piece was a finei example of depth of field control with the stock lens.
Here's a link to the source...
http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=112641
It's a useful forum for info about the EX1.
We are placing our order Friday morning with B&H for the camera, 2 16GB cards, the DVD and 2 larger batteries. Getting a Dell 1400 laptop for field downloads. I realize that it cost a bit more in total than the Z7, but it's a better choice for me picture wise/PALwise and speed of loading from the cards wise. The time to download a 16GB card via USB would be considerably slower. Also it elevates and distances us from HDV competitors for other productions that we do.
Good luck with your decision as well.
Best, Craig

Re: [Dave Williams] Any EX1 owners [In reply to] Can't Post

Did you see any reviews of the Z7U comparing it to the EX in low light. How about how it is against the Canon A1 which is what I currently own.

They are being very shifty in how they are explaining the lux ratings. It pretty much makes it impossible to figure it out anymore.

I was in the process of selling my A1 with the idea of getting this cam or the EX1. But as I read it is not clear either camera will be the perfect choice. The EX is pricey for the whole package. The Z7U uses 1/3 chips and may only get too better low light with huge amounts of noise reduction.

Only time will tell, but I am really hoping to see a review in the next week or so showing some comparisons I can decide on.

I've ordered 9 16G CF cards for my Z7U's and, after rebate, it cost me a whopping $500 and change. Not bad.

Hey Marshall that is really a great deal on those cards.

We've decided to go the Z7 route but the only problem I see so far is no direct support of the m2t file format in FCP.

Dave what else do you know about this issue?

Supposedly, the EX is similar to the VX2100/170 light sensitivity and the Z7U is similar to the VX2000/150 series. Still remains to be seen, but we are having a shootout of sorts on Tuesday so we'll see what happens.

The lux ratings are a joke.

Our local meeting. The same guy from Sony that came to GPVA is coming to our group this week. Hopefully it'll be a good meeting (despite so many having bought the Z7U instead of the EX)!

Baltimore, near BWI Airport. BVA; baltimorevideographers-dot-com

The Sony rep can only bring the EX and not the Z7 (just found out) as there's only 3 going around the US right now....ugh. But we'll see what happens with the others. V1U/Z1U/A1/EX1, with a SD setup of a 170 for low-light comparisons between HD and SD. Hopefully I can pull this off as I'm doing it all myself.

Sorry Bruce - didn't see your post. I don't know anything new but as of right now, clips captured to CF cards must be converted to another file format before editing in FCP.

There is a way to transcode your footage:

http://finalcutpro.digitalmedianet.com/...&afterinter=true

From the reading I've done this can be fixed by either Apple, by supporting m2t files, or Sony, by changing the way the files are written. Focus recently offered a firmware update to their FS-4 that allows the HD files to be QuickTime compatible. Sony could feasibly do the same thing with the CF recorder.

Re: [Daniel] Any EX1 owners [In reply to] Can't Post

Daniel,
Today I ordered the EX1 with 2 16GB memory cards, 2 large batteries and the Sony WA adapter. I also ordered the DVD and a Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop with 7200 160 GB drive. Should be in toward the latter part of the week. Will keep you posted. I believe that the larger chip,1/2" over the 1/3" chipset is important to us for our non-wedding work as they are nearly twice the size hence better low light/ noise ratio. Additionally the over cranking/ pal abilities factored in as well.
Best, Craig

I don't know about the speed of CF cards, all I know is that SxS is ridiculously fast.

Today's best CF cards are rated at 40 MB/sec (320 Mbps) sustained read/write speed, while SxS is rated at 100 MB/sec (800 Mbps). Both are more than adequate for typical HD recording formats and fast file transfers, so it's only specialty tasks like over/under cranking which require higher bandwidth.

With all the flash-based video cameras coming to market, you'd think one of the manufacturers would figure out to make an affordable fixed-lens 3-chip model using CF recording. Panasonic's the closest with their little hand-held model using SD cards, but I think that records AVCHD and the camera may have other limitations. All we really need is a V1U or an XH-A1 with a CF recorder attached, but instead we're getting a variety of experimental designs which don't quite hit the mark.

As far as low-light sensitivity is concerned, the EX1 has just enough to be admirable so it's hard to see how the Z7U could do as well with a smaller sensor based on the same technology. It may come close enough to be useful, but even the EX1 strains a little in really dark settings.

Three things I just heard from my Sony connection today:
1) FCP will support native m2t files by NAB (April)
2) The current 133x cards are handling full blown HD transfer rates just fine
3) Our Z7s are being shipped this week

What I don't understand, Kevin, is what is making videogs believe
that the Z7 will be significantly better in low light than the other 1/3"
chippers that are already out. More wishful thinking and hoping from
videogs?

In my low-light tests the EX1 didn't outperform an FX1 by as much as I'd hoped, so I'm skeptical about the Z7. If someone could post sample Z7 low-light clips that would be helpful.
