Audio Levels and DV

Has anyone found the best way for setting up audio levels when editing miniDV footage, capturing via firewire, editing and dumping back via firewire??? For a long time, I have had my system set up with default audio output levels.....from time to time, I *thought* it was a bit hot, but figured it was poor speaker quality etc.... Well, I got a comment back from someone who had a deck with meters that my tapes were "hot", pegging the meters.....As my DV deck doesnt have meters, I up til now relied on how well the edit sounded through my studio monitors and my sony studio monitor..... Recently my VS10 had to be sent into the shop for service and I am borrowing a DV1000 deck...with meters. Footage tapes someone sent me are PEGGED and my edits were recording PEGGED. Ok, I thought.....tweak the timeline down in level to have the meters read properly. Did that and thought all was well... NOW, a client (the ones with the too-hot footage reels) is saying my master tape is too low on audio.....He brings audio in thru his Mackie and has trim set to 0 (he claims).....he can trim up, but at 0, the meters barely register..... Does this sound like an issue with my tweaking the levels down and using the meters on this loaner deck or on his side, with the Mackie setup and such??? In teh old days, a VU meter wasa VU meter and setting everything to teh same level with tone meant good audio. These days, with ALC and firewire, it seems like it is more difficult....and premiere's audio levels seem whack too... Any advice??? Thanks in advance! DZ
