Backfocus issues with FX7/V1U? Can't Post

On my current edit, I'm having major problems with focus.

I zoom in, focus, then zoom out to frame the shot. But on my current edit, zooming out throws the subject out of focus. I've never noticed this before, and it sucks because I've shot a few weddings since this one!

Can they actually adjust the backfocus on small camcorders with built-in lenses, or is the lens just broke?

Pushing the auto-focus button just sets the focus to infinity, to bring the subject into focus at about 6 foot away.

Anyone else have trouble with these cameras?

I remember people posting this issue when the V1 first came out. Never heard a mention of the FX7 having the same problem.

The cameras were sent back to Sony to correct the problem.
Sorry I don't remember what the fix was.
Check on dvinfo.net and do a search through their forms on v1 back focus problem. you should get a bunch of hits.

Michael

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

Thanks! I went over to the other forum and did some searching, and yeah, there seems to be some others with backfocus issues with the V1U (essentially same camera as the FX7).

I don't see how something like this would just happen overnight, with a camera with a built-in lens. But it might be because I recently quit wearing my eyeglasses during some shoots, so I've been doing more of the "zoom in/focus/zoom out" thing. Instead of buying a new computer, I guess I should have saved up for a new eye exam and new glasses. Laugh

Seeing as how I got 10 weddings in the next 8 weeks, I guess maybe I'll send it in to Sony in December to see what they say. It probably needs to be cleaned anyways.

In the meantime, it's an excuse to start saving for an FX1000. Cool

FX1000?
I thought that you said you would never get another camera that didn't have built in XLR capability.
And also didn't you say that if they made the V1 with 1/3 sensors, then this would be your perfect camera. Well isn't that the Z5? Wink

Laugh Yeah, but just like when I bought the FX1, and the FX7, it'll depend on how desperate I am. The Z5 really does finally have all the specs I've always dreamed of, but we'll have to see what the street price is. I was thinking I'd get a new main cam, and use the FX7 as backup since it sucks bad in low light. However, the FX7 is too expensive/to heavy to carry as a backup/balcony cam, so I'll probably need to try and tough it out for a few more months and then just sell it and get the FX1000. The FX7 is a great camera in decent lighting, but the FX1000, at $3200 for 1/3" sensors, 24P, 20X lens, is just too darned tempting!!! Besides, if I bought the Z5, then I wouldn't be able to complain on VU about how I'll never buy another camera with XLR's again! Tongue

I'd keep it, just for balcony cam reasons. Since the price dropped so low you won't get near what you probably should.

And what do you need balanced XLR inputs for anyway? Don't you just use one external audio source?

Yeah, the FX7 would make a great balcony cam....but two "real" cameras won't fit in my bag...just a palmcorder. Laugh I'd like to get an HC9 for my next balcony camera. Plus, my balcony cam just mounts on a wobbly flash pole, so it can only be a few ounces. I'd like to keep the FX7 packed away at home as a backup, because if my main camera dies, I can't just grab a credit card and buy another one while it is repaired.

My only other audio source during the ceremony is the palcorder in the balcony, and no other source during the reception, so having XLR's with a shotgun+wireless running in Sony's auto-gain is a MAJOR benefit for me. No clunky adapters, no iRivers, no plugging/unplugging receivers during the middle of a scene, just two "usable" tracks of audio on tape with as little work/hassle as possible. I'm all about the simplicity now, and cranking out the very best videos I can, with the very least amount of time, and the least amount of gear I can.

But like always, I'm mostly all talk when it comes to buying new cams. For the rest of 2008 I gotta focus on really cranking out some videos quickly, rebuilding my referral base, and getting my price back up, or I won't be buying ANYTHING next year but a train ticket to the homeless shelter. Laugh

Geez... now you're going to buy a worthless shotgun? I'll give you one for free - our dog has plenty of other chew toys. Laugh

Really though... XLR adapters are pretty cheap (there's not much to them). I like 'em because they make a cam a bit more modular... If you have problems, just take it off and send it in. Can't do that with built in inputs. It's kind of like spilling beer on your laptop Blush. You're screwed.

Regardless, lack of XLR inputs aren't the deal breaker people make it out to be.
