Bad head Can't Post

Just wondering if anyone has had any trouble with the
503 head? (This could maybe apply to the 501 and 516.)

The tilt (up and down) action seems okay but the pan (back and forth)
seems jerky. The wheel for controlling the pan resistance
seems stiff.

Are there any user adjustments possible to the head, besides
the obvious large resistance-adjustment wheel?

Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, were you
able to get it corrected?

It sounds like your set screws need to be tightened, the screws that attach the head to the tripod. This needs to be done periodically, my husband just had to do this to 2 of our 503 heads on a job yesterday. They do loosen over time even if you use the head properly (I'm evidently guilty of not doing that !) The wheel for controlling the resistance is stiff, should be stiff. Newer heads are a bit less stiff.

If you have the bowl leveler, unscrew the grip under the head completely, lift off the head, turn it over, and there are the 3 screws. If you're using a center support tripod, crank it up and you can see the 3 screws underneath the head.

Hope that helped!

YES! i just had emailed bogen last week regarding this SAME issue. they told me to send it in and hope that it was still covered under the warranty. then i searched on google and found that all i needed to do was tighten those three screws... it worked like a charm.

i was SOOOO happy.

Hi, Ryan. So glad to hear from you!

Yours is the 503, too?

What were the main problems you were noticing?

Did the large panning adjustment wheel under the head
seem stiffer than usual?

Did the screws you tightened seem to be loose?

yeah - i've got the 503. the main problem was when i would start to pan left to right (or vice versa) and it would feel loose - but then would catch and be smooth... so it was quite jerky and totally didn't serve its purpose . i did an interview this past week before i had fixed it and i could barely move the shot. so crappy.

but when i took the balance stick (not sure what that part is called... hehe) - off and screwed the screws tighter (two of the three were pretty loose) - it worked flawlessly.. like i had just bought the thing.

did you try it yet? it's super easy.

I have the same thing, there is a lateral movement of about five degrees with no resistance and then is difficult to adjust the resistance during the remainder of the pan. I'll try the solution and see what happens
