Bogen Manfrotto 562 B Can't Post

I bought one. I assumed that the pivoting feet would be cool, but I assumed that I would still be able to have the feet hold the camera up if i wanted to go hands off for a little while IE speeches etc. I like to shoot with monopods, and i have an old manfrotto with feet that are stored within the body, with this monopod I can let it rest and it will act like a tripod with albeit one leg. Is this 562 able to do this, or do you have to be into it at all times with these pivoting feet?

Thanks everyone

I don't own one of these things but do you *really* want to use it for hands free operation? With $4,000+ worth of gear sitting on top of it? Laugh I would think those tiny legs are just meant to steady it and not serve as a replacement for something more stable.

For me, a full blown tripod isn't all that cumbersome to drag around. Just collapse the spreader and go. I use mine as a monopod all the time.

Howard,

The answer is No, you cannot use it as a stand alone tripod.

There is a fluid head at the bottom of the monopod with the legs attached to a base below that.

It gives great stability including on uneven ground while holding the monopod by the strap, body or most often by the cam.

You can balance a very, very light cam such as a HC1 without attachments, but I wouldn't.

The slightest breeze, sneeze, nudge, vicious thought (perhaps even the tape balance changing inside the miniDV housing as it's rolling from one spool the other) could start disturb the balance which would immediately transform into a sledghammer like action, not recommended.

I really like this monopod as you can make smooth, controlled motions with far easier than a one point monopod, but it's still a monopod, not a mini-tripod.

Ditto that...the best monopod ever made is the Manfrotto 3246. Cool

That's my tripod! Rusty, you and I work so similar it's scary. I think you and I should join forces and take over all the video work all over the country. You do the quick and dirty low end, I'll do the $1500 mid priced and we'll find a 3rd partner to handle high end.

I'm thinking we should call it Rusty and Ken's Drive-Thru Wedding Video Emporium.

you in? Wink

Kenneth,

Before you do any work in Texas, be aware that you have to apply (non-refundable appl. fee) and pay for your permits and liceases and for each job you do here in Texas there is will be appearance fees and taxes in addition to annual dues. You will be having to pay over $10K per wedding just to work in Texas, so maybe you will have to be the high end partner with Rusty just to re-coup from your clients your cost of doing business in Texas.

You can find the paperwork and apply at SunnySide Pattison's store that's next to every county annex building in Texas. IF you have a problem finding them, just give me a call.

I'll be sure to get the forms. What time does Clyde go to lunch? I wouldn't want to have to wait. I also have to go get me a formal pair of overalls for the weddings. Wink

I used to drag a *real* monopod with me from weddding to wedding because somebody said I needed one. Right now it's holding up the shed door so the dog can get in and out. Laugh

What type of head you got on those manfrotto sticks? I've got some high dollar Sony contraption with the head built in and it's starting to go south on me. Unsure

I use the 503 head, and love it, but I think it's discontinued and replaced with the 503HDV...

I like that they changed the drag knob to the left side, since I don't use the pan bar, and my right hand rests on the knob...which accidentally gets turned sometimes. Crazy

I've noticed Bogen is changing a lot of model numbers with the HDV suffix. It's really confusing. I have no idea whether it's all been redesigned or the'ye just jumped on the HD hype wagon.

$700 is what I've been budgeting for new sticks and a decent head. I'd go more if I could afford it because I've learned not to scrimp with this piece of gear. Learned a little late as usual though. Unsure

Re: [RT Steele] Bogen Manfrotto 562 B [In reply to] Can't Post

We had a rep from Manfrotto (no longer Bogen, as they have re branded their name) come to our BVA meeting a few months back, and they have pretty much redesigned most of their sticks and heads. So also of their heads and sticks have all been redesigned slightly, not majorly.

BTW, I also found out that they are under the same umbrella as KATA bags, which are made in Israel. There was also mention of another tripod/head manufacturer that is under the same umbrella as well, but the name escapes me (I want to sat Sachler, but probably am wrong here).

My sticks are my most important piece of gear, and what I feel defines my style...regardless of how boring some people might think non-shakey footage is. Tongue To me, whatever camera I have stuck on top of it is inconsequential in comparison. It's mindboggling to me how some can spend so much money on the latest HDV cams, yet shoot with cheap sticks, handheld, monopods, or all other sorts of silly contraptions. But, everyone has their own style that works for them, and the diversity makes more options available for brides to decide on which one works for her the best! Cool

I think it USED to be that Bogen was just sort of like a U.S. distributor for Manfrotto (Italian?) gear, in addition to Kata, Gitzo, Nat. Geo., etc, gear. http://www.bogenimaging.us/...site/bius/lang/en_US

When I first got Manfrotto (I've bought tons of their stuff before finally finding what works best for me personallyCrazy), I bought some "Bogen" tripod bags. They were freaking garbage. I replaced them with padded genuine Manfrotto soft cases...one for each set of 3246 sticks I have, and they were WELL worth the investment. The bags will outlast the sticks! The Bogen bags lasted about one wedding. Laugh

I have the 501 head on mine with the leveling ball attachment. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't level my balls.

I got the idea from someone else here, a few years ago.

I get way smoother shots without the 5 foot long pan bar attached. I keep my hands on the 503...left hand easily accessible to the camera controls, and the right hand easily accessible to the record button.

Then again, maybe it's because of my poor vision, but I stand really close to the LCD, so having my hands directly on the 503 seems to give me very precise control over the pans/tilts. Works for me, anyways. Cool

Plus, all I shoot now are weddings...I don't accept other kinds of work anymore. I think the pan bar would probably be more helpful if I were videotaping basketball games or NASCAR or something.
