Cost per gigabyte... Can't Post

Whenever I go shopping for more storage I check where I've gotten the best deals in the past (Newegg, geeks.com, dealmac.com for specials etc.) and then mentally do some calculations which drive has the lowest cost for gb. That process isn't really that difficult, but its a lot more time consuming than shopping for ink and RAM, for which I use dealink.com and dealram.com. These sites sample all the major sellers for the best prices and list them in a way that shows you, in one glance, where some really good prices can be found. I've often thought that there should be a similar resource for hard drives - a one-stop shopping location. I found a chart that is a step in that direction:

http://forre.st/storage

Its for Newegg only but updates every hour. Check out the other blog entries and then look at the author's profile. Blew me away. You'll see why...

excellent tool, thanx! i buy from newegg, so it'll be very helpful.

right now, though, it looks to me like a combination of space invaders and missile command.

gotta study that key a little while longer before taking action or i might end starting WWIII.

On the same topic, I like looking at this site to see how far hard drives have expanded and dropped in price.

As recently as 1995, it cost $850 for a Seagate 1 GB drive. And we now have drives with an 1000% increased capacity selling for 1/4th that price. Simply amazing.

I always found the simple formula of price/total gigabytes to be an easy way to arrive at a value. For example, the 750 gig Samsung HD Newegg offers at $120 is around .16 / gig which is an exceptional value.

I personally try to avoid anything over .20/gig

I still use two 35 gb seagate ultra wide SCSI drives on one of my computers, they wont die, work flawlessly and cost a thousand bucks a piece. I plan to get my full USAGE out of them and pass them down to my kids :)

Thanks, Joel...that's a great tool. I was completely blown away (like you said) when I looked at the profile. I don't even understand what the heck he's talking about. I feel like my IQ is about 10 now.

Have you heard anything good/bad about Samsung drives? I've got a 2.5" 120gb IDE that seems fine and the reviews are always good.

Hi David!

The oldest drives I still use are 22gb IBM ATA's that are 9 years old. They are perfect for testing out new OS updates but they are loud and clunky - they always were. Makes me appreciate how silent the drives today are. I get a whopping 15 MB/sec out of them.

They seem to be reliable options based on user reviews. Of the new notebook drives out there, the Samsung options appear to be the most advanced as well.

I like the format of this one. Easy to understand and a quick read. Simple usually wins out.

For all intensive purposes it's not always a matter of just finding what's the best value (re: $ per gig). Especially when shopping for a new system drive. I'm looking at the new Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives (1tb)- the increased density awards it amazing speed, and cool temp. operation. In other words I don't mind paying a bit extra for top of the line performance (both in speed and internal case temperature). Cool
